The Aftermarket Warehouse Distributors Association (AWDA), a community of the Auto Care Association, presented its 2024 Outstanding Leadership Award to Cliff Hovis, president of Hovis Auto & Truck Supply in Mercer, Pennsylvania. The award was presented on Nov. 3 at AWDA’s 2024 Annual Conference in Las Vegas. Each year, AWDA bestows this prestigious award, formerly known as the “Leader of the Year,” on an aftermarket professional who has contributed to the industry in a unique and significant way. The award is named in honor of former AWDA President Jack Creamer. Presenting the award this year was 2023 recipient Mauro Cifelli, president of Vast-Auto in Quebec. The business was started in 1952 and has served Northwestern Pennsylvania ever since with 17 locations that focus on customer service, quality parts and experienced personnel. Hovis Auto and Truck Supply consistently provide training seminars in their dedicated facility that was opened in 2012 featuring the latest technology in both automotive and heavy duty. This creates an indelible bond with their customers and serves the industry by ensuring technicians can meet the demands of the latest technology. Hovis has been a tremendous advocate for Right to Repair by engaging his customers through in-person events, in fact his customer base generated over 1,000 letters to congress alone, adding in the social media side, and they have proven to be among the leaders in this effort. He has participated in both national and local advocacy efforts on this issue and is a tremendous spokesperson for the industry. Hovis has also been a loyal supporter of YANG, and his daughter Grace is showing her strength in industry service by recently completing her term as YANG chairperson. Hovis has also been an active member of the Auto Care board of directors, voicing his support of the AWDA community and association initiatives. His expansion into the HD and PBE markets has given the association a unique perspective to meet the needs of these critical segments of the industry. Hovis and his entire family operate their business with a foundation of integrity, which has allowed them to gain the trust of their customers, suppliers and the industry as a whole. NexaMotion Group (NMG) announced the acquisition of City Auto Supply, NexaMotion’s third acquisition of the year. The company has a total of three wholesale distributor locations: two in San Francisco, CA, and one in Honolulu, HI. City Auto Supply was represented by Schwartz Advisors, and the terms were not disclosed. City Auto Supply is a U.S. veteran-owned corporation founded in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1986. The company carries over 100,000 individual parts and is a leading distributor of automotive parts and supplies to the auto repair industry, the company said. “An organization like NexaMotion Group is a great partner for City Auto Supply customers and team members. Standard Motor Products, Inc. announced the completion of the previously announced acquisition of AX V Nissens III APS (“Nissens”), European manufacturer and distributor of aftermarket engine cooling and air conditioning products with a growing array of vehicle control technologies. Under the terms of the agreement, SMP has acquired all the issued and outstanding shares of Nissens for approximately $390 million (€360 million), net of cash and assumed debt and subject to post-closing adjustments, from Nordic private equity firm Axcel and the Nissen family, according to a news release announcing the acquisition. “We are very pleased to announce the closing of the Nissens acquisition. With this combination, we create an aftermarket leader in North America and Europe across our key product categories. The strength of Nissens’ leadership team and overall cultural fit will allow for immediate collaboration on opportunities for growth through cross-selling as well as bi-directional synergies with significant savings potential. Plews & Edelmann will showcase its Edelmann Electric Power Steering (EPS) repair program through live demonstrations at the Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo (AAPEX), Nov. 5–7 in Las Vegas, at the Live Product Demo Area, Level 1 – Booth J8233. Mevotech announced the release of 239 new part numbers, featuring TTX front lower forward control arms for police vehicles. Sue Godschalk has been named Chief Executive Officer of Federated Auto Parts. Following a vote by the Federated executive committee on October 23, it was decided that Godschalk, Federated’s president, will assume the role of CEO on January 1, 2025, replacing retiring CEO Larry Pavey. During her 39-year career at Federated Auto Parts, Godschalk has held several management and financial roles of increasing responsibility, including office manager, assistant general manager, treasurer and vice president, before being named president in 2020. Early in her career, she worked as a jobber store manager, learning the business from the ground up before joining Federated soon after it was formed. “Federated has been on a path of sustained growth, and my goal is to continue the successful strategies that have led us in such a positive direction,” said Godschalk. “I am proud to lead a team of so many talented professionals at Federated who are dedicated to enhancing value for our members, strengthening relationships with our supplier partners, and collaborating with our APSG partners at The Alliance and The Pronto Network. Automotive Parts Headquarters (APH), in collaboration with its supplier partners and the Bartlett family, announced the success of its annual fundraiser dedicated to supporting adults with disabilities. All donations were matched by both APH and the Bartlett family. The collaborative effort resulted in a 2024 contribution of $454,000, bringing the 12-year total to $2.7 million, according to APH. The funds raised will directly benefit WACOSA and its day programs, which provide meaningful work opportunities for over 650 adults with disabilities in central Minnesota. A highlight of this year’s event was the participation of WACOSA’s resident artist, Dan Mondloch, who led a hands-on art experience. Participants from APH and its suppliers worked together to create collage pieces that Mondloch will incorporate into a final artwork commemorating the day and honoring all contributors. “Dan Mondloch’s time and talent were invaluable to this year’s fundraiser,” said Kevin Mack, VP of merchandising at APH. “We are deeply grateful for his contributions. It was truly inspiring to see our suppliers and APH staff come together to create beautiful pieces of artwork. This collaborative spirit enriches our event and reinforces our shared commitment to supporting adults with disabilities in our community.” Following the art experience, John and Nancy Bartlett hosted a cocktail reception and lobster-themed dinner at their home to express their appreciation for this year’s support. The parts industry is a very diverse marketplace. While the landscape is mostly dominated by retail chains and jobber stores serving the general automotive and light truck segment, there are several other specialized parts vendors catering to imports, collision and refinish, powersports, ag and turf, and OEM vehicle brands. Each requires its own unique set of skills, including the heavy truck market. For many of us behind the counter, our only experiences with heavy trucks are when stock orders are delivered to our stores. Heavy-duty parts specialists work in a very different setting than the “year, make, model” format of retail parts, or the VIN-driven world of a dealership parts department. On those occasions when even a veteran P2-certified parts specialist is presented with a request for heavy-duty parts, we are required to think a little differently and be prepared to dig a little deeper to find solutions. Trucks are classified by their gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), with light trucks like Tacoma, Silverado 1500, F-250, and Ram 3500 representing classes 1-3, up to 14,000 pounds. Medium duty (14,001 to 26,000 pounds) covers class 4, 5, and 6, including models like the Ram 4500, F550, and Kodiak 6500. These medium-duty trucks all feature hydraulic brake systems, and are sometimes catalogued alongside their light-duty counterparts. Heavy-duty vehicles, on the other hand, are catalogued primarily by the major components used to build the vehicle. Heavy duty generally describes class 7 and 8 trucks, with a GVWR over 26,000 pounds. Some class 7 trucks feature hydraulic or air-over-hydraulic brake systems, but the majority of trucks in these two classes rely on air brakes to stop these heavily loaded vehicles. Air brakes operate much like hydraulic brakes, using air pressure instead of hydraulic fluid to apply brake force when the pedal is depressed. Air pressure is created by an on-board compressor, and distributed through a series of valves and tubing to the foundation brakes (disc or drum brake components). Semi-trailers, when coupled to the tractor’s air supply, operate the same way. In case of a drop in air pressure, spring-loaded parking brakes serve as an automatic emergency brake. Cataloguing foundation brake parts often requires a combination of measurements, identification of manufacturer-specific design elements, and even axle model numbers. Air components require the understanding and identification of thread pitch and sizing, cross-referencing numbers from multiple vendor information sources, and a solid understanding of what each type of valve does within the system. Engine, drivetrain and suspension components are similarly dependent on how an individual truck was spec’d from the factory. A cement mixer or tri-axle dump truck requires a considerably heavier suspension design than an over-the-road tractor regularly hauling van body trailers full of potato chips. Even within the same model range, a truck manufacturer might offer engines from Cummins, Caterpillar or Detroit, each one mated to one of several manual or automatic transmission options from Eaton, Fuller or Allison. Throw in Rockwell, Eaton or Dana axle packages in one of a dozen different gear ratios, and the combinations become nearly unmanageable. In our automotive cataloguing, those drivetrain options (and most other parts requests) would generally be found through a simple year/make/model search, but with HD parts, that’s only the beginning. At the dealership level, VIN entry yields a copy of the build sheet or bill of materials (BOM) with the relevant options identified, and OE part numbers called out in the electronic catalog. For aftermarket professionals, its off to various manufacturer catalogs, searching individual component or assembly model numbers and/or serial numbers to collect part information. With more focus on identification of standalone parts that are not necessarily exclusive to one vehicle manufacturer, it simply requires a different approach than what many parts specialists are used to. There are instances when traditional aftermarket catalog skills come into play, and many of your existing light vehicle vendors also offer HD parts solutions. Your WD or DC might not stock a full line of heavy-duty parts, but many basics like filtration, lighting, belts, rotating electrical and batteries are often only a daily order away. For slower-moving HD-specific parts, special ordering from existing vendors is often a realistic possibility, assuming your customer can absorb the downtime. Most heavy-duty customers are commercial operators, and time spent waiting on parts is money lost for their businesses and yours. Quick turnaround times for these orders are an everyday expectation in the HD world, so last-moment requests and expedited shipping charges are common. For a parts specialist who enjoys a challenge, the occasional HD parts lookup represents a chance to flex their interchange and cross-reference muscles, and maybe even learn new ways of problem-solving that can be applied to their “regular” daily tasks! HCI Equity Partners announced the launch of Driven Distribution Group, a new automotive aftermarket distribution platform. The three “F”s may sound like a report card we wanted to hide from our parents, but in our industry, they refer to form, fit and function. They are the cornerstones of quality in the aftermarket, and heavily referenced when describing your product offerings. From an engineering standpoint, they are critical considerations when producing an aftermarket component designed to duplicate (or upgrade) an OEM design. Form refers to dimensional and material specifications, and affects the look, feel and even weight of a component. In some enthusiast circles, finish may also be an important consideration. Form is critical for identification, as well as perception of quality. Fit allows a part to be attached to other components or work in harmony with other parts in a subassembly or system. Fine tolerances are often critical to proper fitment between two or more parts, and fit often follows form from a design and engineering standpoint. Function is the ability of the product to perform the intended duties of the original design, and may also include considerations of durability and longevity. In most cases, function is the ultimate goal of a replacement part, with fit and form contributing to this functionality. In many cases, the form, fit and function of an aftermarket part is an exact duplicate of its OEM counterpart. For some components, patent or licensing considerations may prevent an aftermarket provider from creating exact replicas of certain components. When these legal limitations prevent a reputable company from reproducing a design, modifications to the form (which do not affect fit and function) can often allow a manufacturer to produce a suitable replacement. This is not to say that “knockoff” parts are suitable replacements for aftermarket or OEM offerings. The vague or intentionally deceptive origins of gray market and counterfeit parts are a problem for everyone from the supplier to the end user, and undermines the intellectual property rights of both OEM and aftermarket manufacturers. Beauty is only skin deep, and it’s often what you can’t see that makes the difference between a great part and a potential failure. This is most obvious with counterfeit parts, where the form is often the only aspect of the product that matches the original. The use of inferior materials or other cost-cutting measures make reliability and durability a gamble when compared to the genuine article. When it comes to labor-intensive repair parts like a rear main seal, or safety items like brake parts, the fit, form and function are all critical aspects of the manufacturing process. For others, fit and function are enough to get the job done, especially if the form represents an enhancement to the original design, or an upgrade in performance and durability. I recently replaced a window motor on my personal vehicle, using a national aftermarket brand. In addition to the new motor were a half-dozen plug-and-play jumper wire adapters, allowing this single SKU to fit multiple applications. While the form was slightly different than the OEM or another brand’s reman offering, the fit and function were excellent, and that single SKU replaces five other units on my store’s shelving. It was a win for me both professionally and personally! Sometimes, the OEM doesn’t get a design quite right, and the aftermarket sees an opportunity to upgrade a flawed or poorly-conceived part. The increased use of plastics in parts design has led to a few notorious failures. In the late 1990s, we began to see repeated failures of sway bar links on the Ford Taurus. We collectively shook our heads at the OEM plastic design, and replaced them with aftermarket steel links. As these vehicles aged out of the market, it became one of those “remember when?” stories passed to new counterpeople…. until Chrysler inexplicably duplicated the design for its Jeep Renegade and Compass models! The aftermarket came to the rescue once again, and now, even the OEM has upgraded its original plastic links to a steel design. One of the greatest advantages we have over the OEM is our diversity. With hundreds of aftermarket manufacturers creating (or re-creating) replacement parts, the potential for innovation and the sheer number of resources at our disposal gives us more options than those offered by the OEM. Our adaptability and willingness to work outside the confines of an OEM catalog also give us the freedom to find creative or unorthodox solutions to our customers’ problems. Eaton announced it is now offering Advantage automated series clutch and Cummins flywheel kits for the Eaton-Cummins Endurant automated manual transmission (AMT). The two will be sold in the same kit for the first time, according to Eaton. An Eaton news release announcing the product launch explained that a flywheel, which is the interface between the engine and clutch, is bolted to the engine and spins when in operation. The clutch cover, which is bolted to the flywheel, also spins, and the driven disc of the clutch engages against the flywheel, which over time can cause wear. “Today’s manufacturers recommend that flywheels should be replaced, rather than the previous practice of resurfacing worn flywheels,” said Leandro Girardi, director, aftermarket, Eaton’s Mobility Group. “This ensures the flywheel fits correctly to engage with the clutch, and prevents fault codes, excessive wear and vibrations.” Eaton said its Advantage Automated clutch is the original equipment clutch used in the Endurant transmission. Cloyes announced the release of an expanded range of timing chain kits and components for Q3 2024. The company said this latest product launch provides aftermarket solutions for a broad selection of popular vehicle makes and models. Cloyes said this quarter’s new offerings include comprehensive timing chain kits for Ford and Subaru vehicles. They’re designed to support Ford models such as the F-150, Mustang, Expedition and Transit, with engine sizes ranging from 2.7L to 3.7L. Subaru models, including the Forester, Impreza, Outback, and BRZ, are also covered, with kits tailored for 2.0L and 2.5L engines. Advanced low-voltage battery solutions provider Clarios, announced a strategic investment in Altris, a pioneer in sustainable sodium-ion battery technology, with the aim of manufacturing low-voltage, sodium-ion (Na-ion) batteries for the automotive sector. Clarios expects its investment to initially enable Altris to finalize and start pilot production of Na-ion automotive batteries, followed by commercial production beginning in 2026. This equity stake builds on a joint development agreement (JDA) between Clarios, producer of one in three of the world’s low-voltage car batteries, and Altris, a leader in sodium-ion cathode material and battery cell technology, focused on low-voltage Na-ion batteries, according to a news release announcing the strategic investment. Clarios said it will leverage its expertise in Battery Management Systems (BMS), software and system integration to design the Na-ion low-voltage automotive battery system to optimize battery performance. Altris, on the other hand, will focus on developing the sodium-ion cell technology for this low-voltage application. Every vehicle, including hybrid electric and fully electric vehicles, requires a low-voltage energy source to power an increased number of software-based functions such as steer-by-wire, break-by-wire, autonomous functions, and enhanced in cabin experiences. The Clarios low-voltage system architecture, comprising multiple networks and battery power sources, is essential for powering critical safety features and ensuring redundancy in vehicle electrical systems, the company said. Sodium-ion batteries are well suited to meet these increased power demands. “Humans think AI is going to replace them,” says Mike Mohler, executive vice president and chief purchasing officer with the Automotive Parts Service Group. “It won’t. Somebody using AI to be better than you will replace you.” The integration of artificial intelligence in the aftermarket is more advanced than many people might realize, according to Mohler. It’s already yielding impressive results for those who are using it effectively. The primary challenge is not just the availability of data, but the effective use of that data to drive actionable insights and decisions. Mohler cites a report from Accenture showing that AI-driven price optimization can result in a 5% increase in gross margin and a 15% boost in revenue. “You look at some of our competitors, and they’re able to post comparatively outrageous profit margins,” says Mohler. “They’re using AI for logistical prowess. They’re using it for customer service. They’re using it to get the right pricing in play.” The ability to make informed decisions based on comprehensive data analysis is a major advantage of AI. Data scientists in the aftermarket industry are increasingly using the technology to turn large sets of data into actionable insights. This includes identifying market trends, customer preferences and operational inefficiencies. The application of AI in this area can lead to better strategic planning and improved business outcomes. Mohler says those applications can have a significant impact on profitability. “Let’s say the average WD would have a 25-45% gross profit margin, given their business model. Some competitors are posting 58%. AI is going to be the tool to help them catch up. We’ve got to get to 53% minimum, I think. That’s a rarefied position, but it’s been tested by some of the smartest people that I know, and it should be achievable when we’re planning and we’re hoping that it is,” Mohler explains. A Customer Experience Revolution AI’s application extends to customer service as well. Chatbots and virtual assistants are now commonplace, offering customers quick and efficient service. These AI-driven tools have evolved to the point where they can engage in conversations that are increasingly indistinguishable from human interaction. “I wonder how many people know that they’re talking to a chatbot when they’re talking to a chatbot?,” asks Mohler. Navigating the Risks Despite its advantages, AI’s integration into the aftermarket raises several concerns. Cybersecurity is one of them, as increased reliance on data systems introduces new vulnerabilities. “We have employees with access to the internet at a thumb’s notice, and if we’re not careful, they can mistakenly click on something that could disrupt our business for months,” Mohler explains. Mohler also expresses concerns about protecting intellectual property. Misuse of data or inadequate protection against competitive eavesdropping could undermine trust and impact the industry’s integrity. “Once the data hits the public domain, how do we protect it and how do we make sure that it’s not being used against us? How do we know that we’re not enabling our competitor who’s able to electronically eavesdrop on one another like never before?,” asks Mohler. Envisioning AI’s Next Steps Mohler stresses that AI’s influence on the aftermarket is only in its infancy. Over the next 5-10 years, he envisions an advancement from a basic understanding of AI as an algorithmic tool to more specialized applications tailored to industry-specific needs. “So my thought would be that companies would have their own internalized GPTs and industries would have their own internalized GPTs. My hope is also that we will become as skilled at selling to disembodied customers via e-commerce as we are at selling to them when they’re across the counter from us or in our stores,” Mohler says. Mohler references the seven stages of AI when looking ahead to the technology’s impact on the aftermarket. “When it comes to supply chain, when it comes to logistically moving products around, when it comes to optimizing sale price, optimizing customer service, my hope is that we will be a little closer to stage seven. Right now, we’re really at stage one and a half, maybe two,” says Mohler. As the technology evolves, moving beyond its current capabilities, AI’s exact impact on the aftermarket, and countless other industries, will be even more profound. Companies that invest in AI and adapt to its changes will be well-positioned to thrive in the future of the automotive aftermarket. “It’s incumbent upon us to understand AI and to become data scientists ourselves, because everybody’s got access to the data. Whoever can use the most disparate sources for the best outcomes is going to win in my overall view of it,” says Mohler.
