Repairify announced a strategic partnership with Auto-Wares for a collaboration that will enable Auto-Wares customers to access asTech’s advanced diagnostic technologies and repair solutions. Repairify said the arrangement will improve operational efficiency and service accuracy in the automotive repair industry. Auto-Wares announced that Brian Burkett has been named the new director of sales. Burkett began his career as a delivery driver at the Auto Value location in Houghton Lake, Michigan, was later promoted to a salesperson role, and eventually, in 2017, he became district manager, according to Auto-Wares. Burkett’s promotion is a testament to his hard work, leadership and dedication, the company said. Auto-Wares added Burkett attended college career fairs, networked through the Young Automotive Networking Group (YANG), and continually refined his leadership skills, solidifying his impact on the team and the industry. Burkett was awarded several scholarships to support his growth, including the Leadership 2.0 and Heavy-Duty Leadership Scholarships through Northwood University. That growth led Burkett to the director of sales for Auto-Wares Group of Companies. Auto-Wares Group of Companies announced that it has joined forces with Landon Auto Parts. Landon has five locations in lower Northern Michigan (Boyne City, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Indian River and Onaway). They join the 42 locations currently operated by Auto-Wares in the Northern and Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Landon Auto Parts and Auto-Wares officially joined operations on October 31, 2024. Landon Auto Parts stores will be rebranded to the Auto Value name and high-quality national-brand products will be available over the next weeks to replace some of the current private-brand products, according to a news release from Auto-Wares. That same news release explained that the Landon family members, their team and their commitments to the Landon Auto Parts customers will stay intact. While the Landon family operates a hardware and lumber business alongside Landon Auto Parts, the partnership will impact only the Landon Auto Parts business—the Landon-owned hardware and lumber businesses will remain owned and operated by the Landon family. Two Federated Auto Parts members were recently honored for their commitment to the success of Federated initiatives. Federated said this award is presented to a member that has shown outstanding support of the member-owned Co-Man warehouse operation and its programs. The standard automotive powertrain for the majority of the 20th century was the front engine, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) design. The rear axle assembly housed the differential and individual axles, and it is through this assembly that power was transferred to the wheels. Even though both front-wheel-drive (FWD) and four-wheel-drive (4WD) cars were also designed and manufactured during the early years of the automobile, they didn’t flourish and the durability and simplicity of the typical RWD design made it the sole choice of automobile platforms for many manufacturers. In a typical RWD vehicle, the power generated by the engine is transferred through the transmission to the driveshaft, differential and axles to the rear wheels. In a typical 4WD vehicle, a differential/axle assembly is located at the front of the vehicle, and to transfer power to the front, a transfer case is also installed after the transmission and a short driveshaft is installed between the transfer case and front axle. You will also notice that the front differential/axle assembly is different in two ways. One, the differential location is offset for clearance since the engines were always mounted in the center and, two, since the front wheels must turn to steer the vehicle, the axles must have some type of articulating joint at the end, the most common of which is the traditional Universal Joint (U-Joint.) The transfer case transfers the power that exits the transmission to either the rear wheels (RWD), or the front and rear wheels at the same time (4WD.) Another feature of a traditional transfer case is that it offers both high and low ranges in either RWD or 4WD positions, as well as a neutral position. This is so that if the vehicle must overcome particularly difficult terrain, it can be placed in the low range so the engine will operate at a higher RPM to provide additional torque to the wheels. The high range is 1:1, which means the output speed of the transfer case is the output speed of the transmission. The low range ratio varies depending on manufacturer. An important aspect of all this is differential operation. The differential itself transfers the power from the driveshaft to the axles, and it is necessary because it allows power to be transferred to the wheels, but also allows them to travel at different speeds when turning a corner. A conventional differential is considered an “open” design. An operating characteristic of an open differential is that it transfers power to the wheel that spins the easiest. As an example, if one wheel is on ice, that wheel will spin, resulting in minimal traction. The same affect is what causes a car under heavy acceleration to “burn rubber” with only one wheel. To combat this problem, there is another type of differential that is referred to as “limited slip.” There are many different names for this type of differential depending on the manufacturer, but their operation is the same. A limited slip differential contains clutch packs built in between the side gears and the differential case. When one wheel begins to spin from loss of traction, the clutches will grab and transfer power to the other wheel. The same clutches will slip just enough to allow the wheel speeds to differ when going around a corner, so the normal differential action is still available. The majority of cars and trucks on the road come standard with open differentials, due to the additional cost of limited slip. Limited slip differentials have always been an option, just not standard. So, on a four-wheel-drive vehicle equipped with open differentials, technically speaking, the maximum number of wheels that can put power to the ground at any given time is two…kind of funny on something known as a 4×4, but it’s still twice as much traction as RWD only, and for the most part it got the job done. Most people who were really going to be in some serious off-road situations would be sure they were equipped with limited-slip differentials. 4WD, as it was originally developed, was a rather primitive system that required input from the driver, from engaging to transfer case to engaging hubs on the front wheels in many cases. Technology was the eventual downfall of rudimentary 4WD systems as we know them, but the drive to utilize this technology came from the safety benefits of AWD. The ability to transfer power to all four wheels has incomparable benefits for traction, vehicle stability and handling. Not only does this translate to the safety of daily driven vehicles, but it translates to performance, as well. With the advancement of computer and electronic technology, antilock braking systems (ABS) and traction control systems (TCS) all of a sudden knew exactly what was happening at each wheel at all times. Was it losing traction, was it locking up under braking? All this data was now available, and engineers knew that the key to vehicle performance, safety and handling all together, was in the ability to precisely control what happened at each wheel at any given point in time. Traditional differentials, even limited slip, were mechanical devices. There was no external control of how they operated. With electronics and computer control, the traditional differential became a technologically advanced unit containing not only gearsets, but clutch packs like those in an automatic transmission, and their own pumps to pressurize the fluid. The same technology is present in both front and rear differentials, as well as center differentials/transfer cases. AWD systems have the ability to precisely control the amount of torque that is transferred to any given wheel at any point in time, providing absolute control of the vehicle. In conclusion, 4WD is functional, durable, rough and tough, but not user friendly. AWD, the product of technology, computers and electronics, is technologically superior, and provides the safety feature we rely on in today’s vehicles. As part of the commitment, NAPA is awarding 15 $2,500 scholarships to individuals accepted or enrolled in a transportation technician program, along with five $2,500 scholarships specifically for women. We all experience supply chain issues now and then. Back-ordered parts, delayed shipments and even material shortages can affect our ability to provide the parts and services our customers have come to expect from us. Our collective experience during COVID highlights just how interconnected we are with each link in our supply chain. As wholesalers/retailers, we maintain a particular stocking inventory of parts, supplies and accessories based on the needs of our customer base. As manufacturers, our vendors also maintain inventories of the raw materials, components and subassemblies that go into creating the products that we sell each day in finished form. Any hiccup in their production process can snowball into a shortage or delay if an alternate solution cannot be found in time. The semiconductor “chip shortage” of 2021-’22 effectively crippled the auto industry, preventing some 12 million vehicles from being completed on schedule. In this example, there were no alternative parts available to fill the demand for specialized semiconductors. In the manufacturing world, alternative parts are a way for a supplier to meet production schedules and keep an assembly line moving along uninterrupted. If a previously sourced component becomes obsolete or otherwise unavailable, another vendor or supplier might be contracted to fill the order. If a raw material is out of stock, another material with similar properties might be substituted in its place. For those of us behind the counter, sourcing alternative parts is what we do best. Our parts and supplies are already an alternative to the OEM components they are designed to replace, so what happens when our own alternative parts are backordered, delayed or otherwise unavailable? Our first instinct, in most cases, is to outsource the part from another supplier, or even a competitor. We are lucky to have a great diversity of options in most aftermarket categories, so if our preferred solution isn’t available, there’s a good chance that an alternative is out there… somewhere. For obsolete, discontinued or otherwise hard-to-find parts, the search often leads us to specialists in NOS (new old stock) or reproduction parts, or even the used market. Just as we have come to know which of our vendors offers a particular product, it is also in our best interest to know where to obtain those things that we don’t have ready access to. When it comes to finding needles in haystacks, your networking skills can be just as important as your catalog proficiency. Over the years, I’ve built up a mental index of industry contacts, former coworkers and clients, and general “know-it-alls” whom I can turn to for help when I’ve hit a dead end. Sometimes another set of eyes on a problem is all it takes to see the answer! We can’t possibly fulfill every customer request, but even when an elusive part isn’t available to us, we are still uniquely positioned to suggest alternatives. As customers, we all hate to be told “no,” but we can better accept that moment of disappointment if the person across the counter from us cares enough about our needs to point us in the right direction. Paul Agather, president and CEO of Federated Auto Parts member Automotive Jobbers Supply, was honored with the Art Fisher Memorial Award, Federated’s most esteemed recognition. He received this award earlier this month during the Automotive Parts Services Group membership conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. “The Art Fisher Memorial Award is the highest honor we bestow upon our members, and this year it goes to Paul Agather, a member who has shown exceptional commitment to the initiatives and objectives of the Federated group,” said Bo Fisher, chairman of Federated Auto Parts. “Although the award is given each year, it signifies enduring commitment, support, engagement and loyalty to the Federated community. My father would have taken great pride in presenting Paul with this award and recognizing his ongoing dedication to the success of Federated, his fellow members and the aftermarket industry.” Agather began his career at Automotive Jobbers Supply in 1988 before leaving to finish college in 1990. He returned to the company in 1993 and held a variety of positions including director, treasurer, CFO and CIO, before assuming his current role as president and CEO. Active in the industry, Agather has served as a committee member of the Aftermarket Warehouse Distributors Association (AWDA) logistics and technology committee and has been a presenter at several AWDA industry events, encouraging and promoting the use of technology in the aftermarket, according to a news release announcing his recognition. He is a member of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) leadership council for the state of Washington and serves as vice chair of the NFIB Washington state political action committee. Named after Federated founder Art Fisher, the Art Fisher Memorial Award is presented annually to a member of the Federated group who has demonstrated unwavering dedication to the success of Federated Auto Parts, its members and initiatives. Additionally, the company is introducing the next generation of its AutoPartIQ inventory assessment tool—with new features for a more productive customer experience. New Parts Bring Timing Chain Kit Coverage to 120+ Million Dayco’s aftermarket team launched the line in 2022 due to the car parc shift from timing belts to timing chains at the OE level. The timing chain kits, which feature OE-quality components, cover high-volume light-duty engine applications. They include all the necessary components for a thorough and complete repair, building on Dayco’s mission of recommending system replacement as a best practice. Dayco says the kits include: Timing and secondary chains that prevent stretch for the life of the kit – and address the no. 1 replacement issue; Precision-machined cam and crank sprockets for quiet, noise-free performance; Direct fit OE-quality, high-grade plastic guides, as well as VVT solenoids and cam phasers when the application calls for it; and Packaging that features a QR code that links directly to detailed installation instructions. Ali is the vice president of sales at Arch Auto Parts, a division of NexaMotion Group. The Counter Professional of the Year award, sponsored by WIX Filters and presented at AAPEX in Las Vegas, annually recognizes an automotive aftermarket parts professional whose dedication, work ethic and expertise elevate their business and the profession as a whole. “Moe’s commitment to customer service is what sets him apart,” says Tina Davis, senior marketing manager – WIX global and US. “No one is more dedicated to getting the right parts for his customers. It’s why they continue to come back to him decades later. We are honored to recognize Moe as the 2024 Counter Professional of the Year.” Born in Guyana, Ali came to the United States at the age of eight. Over the years, he took on a variety of roles, all of which helped develop the skills and knowledge needed to thrive as an aftermarket parts professional. “Moe has developed excellent parts and sales skills,” said Chris Bodh, group president of general repair businesses at Arch’s parent company, NexaMotion Group. “He’s loved and respected by his staff and customers and has an amazing attitude, even when he is juggling a lot of priorities.” Ali has made a career based on exceptional customer service. Developing relationships is what keeps generations of customers coming back to him. His philosophy is simple: “Get ‘em the right part, the first time.” “Moe just worked hard and earned a lot of respect from a lot of his colleagues and customers,” said Kish Samaroo, vice president of operations at Arch Auto Parts. “He is the go-to guy. Every customer wants him because he has this personality that is really cool and calm.” Despite ascending to an executive role, Ali doesn’t shy away from the sales floor. The Aftermarket Warehouse Distributors Association (AWDA), a community of the Auto Care Association, presented its 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award in Honor of Martin Fromm to Sue Godschalk, president of Federated Auto Parts. The award was presented by AWDA Chairperson Ashlee Arnold on Nov. 3 at AWDA’s 2024 Annual Conference in Las Vegas. AWDA’s Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes individuals who have, over the course of many years, distinguished themselves through their unselfish commitment to, and high level of performance within, the motor vehicle aftermarket industry. The award is named in honor of former AWDA President Martin Fromm. Starting 52 years ago at the bottom and working her way up to the very top of the organization, Godschalk began in the aftermarket in the inventory control department and this year will go on to become CEO of Federated Auto Parts. She has experienced great success in an industry that has been traditionally dominated by men. Like many small business leaders, Godschalk wears numerous hats including managing financials, people, meetings, payments, rebates and much more. She’s a consensus builder who listens, contributes, pushes hard for what she believes in and then implements the plan better than nearly anyone else. Godschalk leads through servant leadership, collaboration and by putting the time in until the job is done. Like all great leaders, she seeks professionalism over popularity. She doesn’t seek the limelight and accomplishes far more than nearly everyone else, and for years has been able to set new standards working alongside her husband Herb. Godschalk had great mentors in Larry Pavey, Rusty Bishop and Art Fisher, as well as all of the Federated membership. Her team has benefited from being around such a highly capable person who is the perfect combination of a productive manager, worker bee, and intelligent team player. Great plans can often fail without excellent execution and Godschalk works the plan as well as anyone and deserves credit for all of her successes both personally and professionally. While working long hours, she finds time to support her church as the lector and the secretary of the parish council. She also loves to cook and entertain, and in high school, she was even a starter on her basketball team and the captain of their cheerleading squad. The Aftermarket Warehouse Distributors Association (AWDA), a community of the Auto Care Association, presented the 2024 Art Fisher Award for Excellence in Education, to Larry Pavey, CEO of the Automotive Products Services Group. The award was presented on Nov. 3 by AWDA Vice-Chair Fletcher Lord III at AWDA’s 2024 Annual Conference in Las Vegas. AWDA’s Art Fisher Award for Excellence in Education is presented annually to an aftermarket company or individual that demonstrates outstanding commitment to education and training, either within their organization or throughout the industry. Given in memory of former AWDA Chairman Art Fisher, the award grants scholarships in the name of the award winner to two students enrolled in the automotive aftermarket management program at Northwood University. Larry Pavey, CEO of the Automotive Parts Services Group, has spent his entire career in the automotive aftermarket, starting in sales at Walker Manufacturing, then on to the BWD division of Echlin. He served as vice president of marketing for the Borg Warner, Niehoff and Whitaker brands. With Pavey at the helm, Echlin’s brake business made more than 20 acquisitions, becoming the largest brake supplier in the aftermarket industry. He served as president of Echlin’s North American Operations and later president of Dana’s Under Vehicle Group. Today Pavey serves as CEO of the Automotive Parts Service Group, a joint venture between the National Pronto Association and the Federated Alliance. He has been active in many industry associations, serving on the boards of ASE, AAPA, MEMA, the Auto Care Association and the AWDA Board of Governors. In 2016 Pavey was presented with the Martin Fromm AWDA Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2018 he was presented with the Jack Creamer Leader of the Year Award. His commitment to the automotive aftermarket is long and varied. He has worked on both sides of the supply chain. He is a quiet but effective leader and teacher who has had a major impact on the industry. Pavey has the ability to look at the industry as a whole and strive to do what is best for everyone to help them succeed. The Aftermarket Warehouse Distributors Association (AWDA), a community of the Auto Care Association, presented its 2024 Pursuit of Excellence Award to Larry Pacey, president and CEO of NPW Companies. The award was presented by AWDA Secretary Cliff Hovis at the association’s 2024 Annual Conference on Nov. 3 in Las Vegas. Established in 1983, the Pursuit of Excellence Award is presented exclusively to an AWDA member for special achievement and for the setting of high standards as an example for others to follow, in business and in volunteer or advocacy efforts. More than 55 years ago, Larry Pacey founded NPW Companies, then known as National Carburetor Exchange, out of a 600-square-foot building. Pacey did everything from sales and collections to rebuilding carburetors entirely on his own. Five decades later, the company — still led by Pacey but now staffed by an effective team — boasts 30 locations across the United States and Canada, including more than 100 corporate and independently owned jobbers, and services nearly 200 Auto Value, Bumper to Bumper and Confidence Plus Certified Service Centers. With Pacey at the helm, NPW is one of the most expansive and fastest-growing warehouse distributor powerhouses in the nation. Pacey had a big vision for NPW Companies from the start. Within five years of founding, he evolved the business to include a retail parts store handling many performance lines. In 1974, the business became a warehouse distributor carrying all performance lines.
