      Some automotive issues make themselves known instantly and in a big way. But signs of a bad water pump aren’t always so brash. A bad water pump can wreak havoc on your engine and should not be taken lightly. But how does a water pump go bad? Here’s a few bad water pump symptoms that can help you deduce if repairs are in order.
      Leaking Coolant
      One of the most common symptoms of a bad water pump is a link hidden, please login to view from the water pump itself. Many water pumps are constructed with a weep hole below the pump drive shaft. Normally this weep hole is dry as the pump drive shaft seals keep the coolant at bay and away from the water pump bearings. But if the seal fails coolant can then seep past harming the water pump bearings and dripping out of the weep hole. The driver may notice a sweet smell of coolant cooking off the hot engine or a small puddle of coolant under the vehicle when parked. If the coolant is dripping on the accessory drive belt system there may be damp areas under the hood. If your vehicle develops a coolant leak or you find yourself adding coolant to keep it filled, check the area around the water pump just in case.
      Overheating
      One of the common signs of bad water pump functionality is link hidden, please login to view. The pump may not leak coolant, but the pump mechanism itself may have failed. Over time the fins of the pump can actually wear down to the point where they are no longer moving coolant. Cavitation can eat away at the metal pump vanes and pump surfaces. Plastic water pump vanes can disintegrate over time as the plastic ages. This all adds up to coolant that is no longer moved through the engine block and into the radiator to be cooled, leading to overheating.
      Bad Noises
      Water pumps have bearings that have to stand up to not only engine heat but also tension from the drive pulley. If you start to hear a grinding noise or high pitch squealing from the front of the engine, the water pump may be trying to tell you something. Try and rule out squealing belts by double checking belt condition and belt tension. Once you are sure the belt isn’t the cause try to pinpoint the source of the bad water pump noise. Be careful to not place any body parts near that rotating accessory drive system or the engine cooling fan. Simply stand in front of the running engine with the hood open and observe for a few minutes.
      Oil Contamination
      How to tell if water pump is bad can sometimes depend on the design of the engine. Some water pumps are buried inside the engine which makes it difficult to observe any problems. For example Ford Duratec V6 engines have the water pump located behind the timing cover. A leak from the water pump will allow coolant to mix with oil around the timing chains but the leak will not be visible on the outside of the engine. Checking the engine oil regularly and looking for an increase in oil level (due to coolant collecting in the oil pan) or a milkshake-like oil appearance are signs of possible symptoms of a bad water pump. Unfortunately these can also be signs of a bad cylinder head gasket, so further investigation will be required.

      Delphi Technologies, a brand of BorgWarner, unveiled its new Sparta fuel-pump line at AAPEX, showcasing the latest offering in its expanded aftermarket portfolio.
      Designed specifically for older and high-mileage vehicles, Sparta made its AAPEX debut with updated visuals and new packaging. The Sparta brand offers another revenue opportunity for distributors and customers, targeting a specific subgroup of older vehicles.
      The company also demonstrated its fuel-tank cleaning tool live at the booth. The tool is designed for scenarios when the fuel tank is difficult to drop or full of fuel; the magnetic head is effective at collecting debris from hard-to-reach areas of the tank. The cleaning tool has been well-received by technicians for helping optimize their productivity and deliver customer satisfaction.

      BorgWarner has added more than 5,000 Delphi-branded SKUs, or over 150% growth to the product line now totaling 8,500 SKUs, including more than 2,000 control arms.
      All chassis product offerings undergo thorough dimensional and material analyses including extreme temperature, fatigue, three-axis and salt-spray testing in order to ensure premium product, durability, quality and the perfect fit. Further expansion is planned across products such as tie rods, sway bar links, control arms, and ball joints, where the company currently has 98% sales coverage across both domestic and import applications. Similarly, BorgWarner has continued to expand its Delphi Technologies engine-management line by 175 SKUs over the last year, with engine-sensor coverage and ignition coils.
      Exhaust-gas temperature sensors, a newer part added to the Delphi Technologies portfolio, now has nearly 50 part numbers spanning both domestic and import applications.
      Delphi Academy
      Booth visitors also learned about the Delphi Academy, which has been designed with input from technicians to ensure it caters to their needs. It has more than 30 courses run by ASE-certified technicians, with both hands-on and virtual options available on the platform. Technicians who lead those training courses were at AAPEX, offering the chance for visitors to learn from the experts. Several courses for electric vehicles and battery electric vehicles are already available through the Delphi Academy with updates planned in the future.
      For commercial-vehicle distributors and technicians, BorgWarner brought the recently launched Cummins HPI Application Kit for the Hartridge HK1400 Cambox. The HK1400 is an all-makes solution for testing electronic unit injectors and electronic unit pumps and is an essential choice for diesel workshops servicing diesel commercial vehicles. The HPI Application Kit is a set of dedicated ancillary hardware that replicates real-world conditions for accurate HPI testing.
      Additionally, the Hartridge Sabre CRi Expert was displayed at the show. This advanced, compact, all-makes common rail injector tester comes with new test plans, new test steps, injector coding feature and a 2,700-bar rail pressure range enabling testing of LD, MD and HD common rail applications. Its features and functions make the Sabre CRi Expert a future-ready testing solution that helps shops stay ahead of the market, according to the company.

      Continental has added a new line of filtration products to its fast-growing aftermarket portfolio.
      The new line features a wide range of OE-quality oil, fuel, air and cabin filters for applications on domestic and import cars, vans, SUVs and light trucks.
      “Built to ensure safe engine operation and clean air in the vehicle interior, our premium OE-quality filters are designed to deliver reliable protection against dirt, abrasion, ultrafine particles and moisture for injection systems, engines and passengers,” said Laura Huerst, Continental product manager. “These world-class filters are produced to the same quality and performance standards we apply to our original-equipment parts.”
      Continental premium oil filters are manufactured using the most advanced technologies and innovative filter media available to ensure the best engine performance and minimum fuel consumption, according to the company. This is especially important as the industry’s use of new “long-life” oils and longer service intervals continue to increase.
      The filters are offered in spin-on and immersion designs.
      Continental air filters help ensure a constant air supply to the combustion chamber by efficiently filtering out impurities and dirt particles that can clog injectors, increase engine wear and affect fuel consumption. They are designed to deliver superior efficiency and feature a high dirt-particle-absorption capacity, according to Continental.
      Continental cabin filters feature a pollen and active carbon formulation that provides the best possible atmosphere and comfort in the vehicle interior, even under adverse weather conditions.
      The cabin filters offer a very high level of efficiency and microbiological decomposition, as well as an excellent resistance to moisture. The pollen filters are made of nonwoven material that can capture more than 90% of particles with a diameter of over 2 μm. The nonwoven activated carbon filters can capture particles of 0.01 to 2 μm and effectively prevent gas, bacteria, fungi and odors from entering the vehicle’s interior, according to the company.
      Continental gasoline fuel filters employ cutting-edge technology to meet the demands of modern high-performance fuel injection systems. The filters are designed to retain impurities less than a micrometer and also separate water from fuel to help prevent power loss and potential engine damage.
