Here’s our Q&A with Bill Hanvey, president and CEO of the Auto Care Association.

AMN/CM: What did your organization accomplish in 2021 that you are most proud of? 

BH: Without question, I am most proud of the fact we were able to meet once again at AAPEX in 2021.  The Auto Care team along with our show partners at MEMA put extensive thought into the health and safety protocols that were implemented.  Despite the severely diminished presence of our international attendees, by all accounts the show was successful and I have heard consistent feedback from our guests that they were able to hold productive meetings. We are an industry that values face-to-face interaction and while our 18 months of Teams and Zoom meetings got the job done, there is no substitution for sitting across the table from your customer or supplier.  In addition to the show itself, our communities such as Women In Auto Care, YANG and Import Vehicle all had the opportunity to once again reunite, share stories and find the connection that turns a meeting of diverse people into a true community.

AMN/CM: As advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and other emerging technologies become more prevalent on new vehicles, it will require the brightest minds to service and repair them. How can we better position this challenge as an opportunity for the parts and service segments of the aftermarket?

BH: There is no question that today’s vehicles are becoming more and more complicated technologically and require different skill sets for maintenance and diagnostics. In order for us to meet the technician shortage and skills gap, we need to continually push our state and federal governments to invest in apprenticeship programs in order to draw and retain talented young women and men into the industry. 

The opportunity for our industry is that the shops that make the investments in training and tools will be successful for many generations to come. Not every shop will be able to invest in their businesses to support full ADAS repair/calibration and we will begin to see more and more aftermarket ADAS “specialists,” just as we saw exhaust specialists 50 years ago, as this technology becomes more and more prevalent. 

Pricing models will change at the shop level as well, with diagnostics accounting for a much larger percentage of the repair bill, which, in turn, will help pay for the technological expertise required of today’s technicians.   

AMN/CM: What do you feel is the greatest threat facing the automotive aftermarket right now? 

This is not going to be a popular answer, but in my opinion APATHY is our greatest threat. Business is good, we are growing despite a pandemic, and parts supply can’t meet demand. What’s not to like? Well, if you take a look at the threats our industry is facing both from a regulatory and technological standpoint, we need to all become more activated in preserving our future. Our industry has fewer than 10 lobbyists collectively advocating for our behalf; the automakers employ more than 270. Despite the fact that we employ more than 4 million people, we have a hard time activating people in our industry to become engaged in the preservation of our future. This would entail hosting a member of Congress at their place of business, donating to ACPAC or something as simple as signing a petition that supports Right to Repair. We also have to acknowledge the advances in technology and prepare our industry for the transition to selling/installing parts with associated code and the growth of the EV. We have always adapted and need to get young women and men trained for the next generation of vehicle repair. 

AMN/CM: What phrase describes your “words to live by?”

RH: Do the right thing.

AMN/CM: What is your best icebreaker at a networking reception?

RH: How’s business? 

AMN/CM: What is your dream car, or favorite vehicle you’ve owned?

RH: Dream car: Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

Favorite car: My first one, 1970 Buick Skylark

      Advance Auto Parts announced it has opened 22 new stores in the Los Angeles market as part of the company’s broader strategic expansion into the Western United States. 
      In spring 2021, Advance announced its plan to expand into California by leasing 109 Pep Boys stores and converting them to Advance stores, more than half of which are in the Los Angeles area. 
      “We estimate that 70% of our customers in Los Angeles fit the profile of the classic do-it-yourselfer. Pairing that with the more than 7.6 million registered vehicles in Los Angeles’ unique car culture, this is a tremendous opportunity for Advance to bring care and speed to motorists through expert advice and best-in-class products and services,” said Tom Greco, president and chief executive officer of Advance. “Our timing couldn’t be better as the average vehicle age increases while used car and gasoline prices are rising, resulting in greater demand for vehicle maintenance.”
      Vehicle owners in Los Angeles and other parts of the West will gain access to everything Advance stores offer, such as free curbside and in-store pickup within 30 minutes of ordering online, as well as some of the most trusted automotive brands in the world, including DieHard, the company noted. In response to the emerging popularity of hybrid and electric cars, Advance last month introduced the DieHard EV battery – the first-to-market 12-volt battery designed specifically for hybrid and electric vehicles and sold exclusively at Advance.
      Advance also will support local communities and professional technicians across California by employing approximately 1,850 team members in the state when all 109 stores are converted, including staffing the company’s newly opened 45,000-square-foot “super hub” flagship location, centrally located off the 10 and 110 freeways in the Pico Union neighborhood near downtown Los Angeles. 
      With a growing need to service the approximately 14 million registered vehicles in California, including an increased number of electric and hybrid vehicles, Advance also brings the ability for professional repair partners to expand their technical knowledge with virtual and in-person training opportunities, available through Carquest Technical Institute and Worldpac Training Institute, which are developed and taught by factory-trained instructors and available to automotive technicians nationwide, Advance noted.

      Fisher Auto Parts announced it will acquire LaCava & Sowersby Auto Parts by the end of June.
      David Reid, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Fisher Auto Parts, and William Sowersby, Steven LaCava and Paul LaCava, principals of LaCava & Sowersby, made the announcement.
      The acquisition involves three large-volume locations in Fall River, Somerset and New Bedford, Massachusetts, respectively, that are located in close proximity to an existing distribution center owned by Fisher Auto Parts in Providence, Rhode Island.
      LaCava & Sowersby Auto Parts is a third-generation family-owned business and has been a trusted authority for 37 years.
      William Sowersby, John LaCava, Steven LaCava and Paul LaCava began operations in a single-floor building on Plymouth Avenue in Fall River, working 13-hour days, seven days a week to build their business. Anthony LaCava, father of John, Steven and Paul, joined the operation two years later, bringing with him more than 40 years of automotive experience.
      Because LaCava & Sowersby is family-owned and -operated, customers have always enjoyed a high level of personalized service. As the sign out front proclaims, “Service is the Key.”
      Soon after opening the Fall River location, the building was expanded to add a second floor and an additional loading dock. In 1994, LaCava & Sowersby opened a location on Grand Army Highway in Somerset and in 2001, another location was opened on Kempton St. in New Bedford.
      Anthony LaCava retired in 2002, and after John LaCava’s sudden passing in 2019, the remaining three owners and their resilient employees continued to thrive even through the toughest of times.
      Fisher Auto Parts is the founding member of Federated Auto Parts Distributors and now has approximately 500 company-owned locations plus more than 100 independent jobbers in 18 states.

      Jennerstown Speedway in Jennerstown, Pennsylvania has claimed the $50,000 prize as winner of the “Advance My Track Challenge,” a community engagement-based program led by Advance Auto Parts.
      Jennerstown secured the most votes out of six NAAPWS (NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series) tracks participating in the final round of voting. Opened in the late 1920s as a dirt oval, the speedway was paved in 1987. Officially measuring as a .522-mile track, Jennerstown hosts NAAPWS racing and other racing series from April to October on an annual basis.
      Jennerstown will be able to use the grand prize for capital facility enhancements and efforts to support the local community.
      “Jennerstown is a true gem of the grassroots racing scene in Pennsylvania, and we’re proud to celebrate their team and community as winners of the Advance My Track Challenge,” said Jason McDonell, Advance’s executive vice president of merchandising, marketing and eCommerce. “Fans have supported racing at Jennerstown for generations and winning this challenge is a great example of their passion and dedication for their local track. We’ve enjoyed seeing how Advance My Track has been embraced by the racing community and we look forward to advancing grassroots racing in the years to come.”
      Jennerstown also will host an Advance Auto Parts-themed night for race fans during an upcoming weekend of racing in 2022. As part of the Advance My Track Challenge, Advance awarded $15,000 to the track finishing with the second-most votes, Alaska Raceway Park in Palmer, Alaska. The track finishing in third, Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa, received $10,000.
      “It’s great to see a historic track such as Jennerstown win the Advance My Track Challenge in their return to the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series family,” said NASCAR Senior Vice President of Racing Development & Strategy Ben Kennedy. “We know Jennerstown will use this award to continue to elevate the track and grassroots racing within the community, and we appreciate Advance’s continued dedication to supporting these facilities. Additionally, we’re looking forward to Alaska Raceway Park and Adams County Speedway taking advantage of their opportunity to build upon their strong foundation in their regions.”
      The Advance My Track Challenge began April 5, with 21 NAAPWS tracks across the United States and Canada represented in the program’s first round of voting. Fans voted up to three times daily in the first round, which concluded May 6. The six tracks receiving the most fan votes took part in the final round of voting, from May 9-13.
      More than 130,000 total votes were tallied during this year’s challenge.
      Advance promoted the program through its partnership with the Team Penske organization and its driver Ryan Blaney, a seven-time NASCAR Cup Series race winner. He raced the No. 12 Advance Auto Parts Ford Mustang with “Advance My Track Challenge” branding at the April 9 Martinsville Speedway race and on May 9 at Darlington Raceway.
      “First off, I’m excited for the team at Jennerstown,” said Blaney. “It’s a track that has meant a lot to my family. My grandfather raced there for many years, so it’s neat to see them win the Advance My Track Challenge. This is such an outstanding program, and I think it’s great what Advance is doing to support local race tracks. These tracks are all so important to their communities, and for local race fans, there’s no better value than visiting your local NASCAR track on a Saturday.”
