The future of mobility is electric, notes Schaeffler, which predicts that in 2035, around 50% of the newly manufactured cars and light commercial vehicles worldwide will be fully electric and 30% hybrid. Another 20% of all newly manufactured passenger cars will have only an internal combustion engine in 2035. The regional markets paint a nuanced picture of the powertrain mix, as Matthias Zink, CEO, Powertrain & Chassis, explained in his keynote address at the 2026 Vienna Motor Symposium: “Whereas here in Europe, we are gearing up for a ban on internal combustion engines more or less due to current legislation, we are seeing significant demand for hybrid vehicles in markets outside the EU far beyond 2035.” 2035 Powertrain Mix and Regional Markets Above all, in North and South America and in Southeast Asia, hybrids are set to dominate new vehicle production within the next 10 years. In Japan, hybrids will account for as much as around 77% of production. “In this context, our technology-neutral product strategy embracing all powertrain system options helps us to manage these mixed market developments and above all, address increasing customer demand for hybrid solutions,” says Zink. Volume Production for Dedicated Hybrid Transmissions The company said it sees potential in the efficiency and flexibility of hybrid powertrain technologies in close collaboration with vehicle manufacturers worldwide. This is why Schaeffler offers components, including complete systems, for diverse hybrid topologies—mild, full, and plug-in hybrids and vehicles with range extenders. These vehicles play a role in reducing CO2 emissions and achieving fleet targets when driven predominantly in electric mode. Schaeffler started developing complete systems for the hybrid powertrain more than 10 years ago. A current example is the company’s MultiMode dedicated hybrid transmission, which goes into volume production this year worldwide at various European and Asian vehicle manufacturers. It is an integrated system with two electric machines, power electronics, and hydraulics for cooling and actuation of the clutch and parking lock. Schaeffler supplies the associated software and functions from a single source. The total weight of the compact module is 125 kilograms and delivers up to 145 kilowatts of peak power. It is suitable for full and plug-in hybrids and offers three driving modes: electric, serial and parallel. In serial mode, this flexibility allows the internal combustion engine to operate consistently at optimum efficiency. Several presentations at the Vienna Motor Symposium addressed the dedicated hybrid transmission. Zink explained the strategic rationale behind it: “We are convinced that hybrids offer consumers an easy introduction to electric mobility. If driven extensively in electric mode, these vehicles make an important contribution to the decarbonization of the mobility sector. Every gram of CO2 saved counts.” Components for the Hybrid Powertrain Internal combustion engines in hybrid powertrains also have to be efficient and meet future emission standards and noise requirements. Ideally, they should be designed so that the driver doesn’t detect any difference between electric and internal combustion engine driving mode. Schaeffler sees innovation potential in this requirement. The company said it is developing damping solutions like the spoke damper, which eliminates torsional vibrations at the crankshaft and minimizes installation space. Its position directly in the crankcase means there is no need to seal off the crankshaft, which reduces friction. The spoke damper is already in volume production at Chinese manufacturers, with further production starts set to take place in the course of this year. To improve engine efficiency without compromising driving dynamics, Schaeffler also offers next-generation camshaft phasing units. These incorporate a brushless DC (BLDC) motor including control unit, integrated electronics, and software for optimized valve control across a wide range of loads and speeds. The high adjustment speed and precision allow for efficient combustion. Last year, Schaeffler marked the production launch of the latest generation of camshaft phasing units at its plant in Taicang, China, and is supplying customers worldwide. Growth Segment: Sensor Technology Thanks to the merger with Vitesco Technologies in 2024, Schaeffler said it now has a sensor technology portfolio used, for example, in emission control and exhaust gas aftertreatment. For improved emission control when using renewable fuels, Schaeffler offers the Flex Fuel sensor. This high-precision sensor is mounted between the fuel tank and engine and measures the ethanol content in the fuel before it is injected. “Following our merger with Vitesco Technologies, we have a well-rounded, innovative product portfolio, expanded capabilities in the key R&D segments, an increased global presence, and greater vertical integration,” said Zink. “We are therefore in a good position to work with our customers as a key partner to successfully shape the transformation – in Germany, Europe and worldwide.” The post Schaeffler Starts MultiMode Hybrid Transmission Volume Production appeared first on Counterman Magazine. Plews & Edelmann has introduced a complete Electric Power Steering (EPS) repair category—Edelmann EPS drive belt kits, torque sensor replacements, couplings, and proprietary service tools—that eliminate the need for expensive full rack replacement on millions of modern vehicles. The company said the product line delivers more than 50 percent cost savings compared with rack replacement while restoring full power steering assist with a straightforward installation using common hand tools. Electric power steering is now standard on most modern vehicles. Inside every belt-driven EPS rack is a rubber belt connecting the electric motor to the steering gear. When that belt wears or breaks, steering reverts to manual mode—heavy, unresponsive, and unsafe. Until now, the only fix was complete rack replacement: a repair that routinely exceeds $1,000 in parts alone, requires module reprogramming and realignment, and can leave vehicles out of commission for days. Edelmann EPS Drive Belt Kits According to the company, Edelmann EPS Drive Belt Kits provide everything needed for a complete repair in a single box, including a replacement drive belt, belt housing gasket, O-rings, inner and outer boot clamps, additional seals as needed and rack-specific video installation instructions. No module re-flash is required, no realignment and no specialized diagnostic equipment. “The industry treated EPS failure as a rack problem,” said Dan Billie, CEO of Plews & Edelmann. “While others claim repair innovations, we looked at the root cause and realized, in many cases, it was a belt problem. That’s a fundamentally different repair—and it means professional technicians and DIYers now have a cost-effective option where one simply didn’t exist before.” Couplings Expand Vehicle Coverage Replacement couplings extend this repair-first philosophy to even broader vehicle coverage. The 9700 Pinion Driven Motor Coupling covers over 5.8 million vehicles in operation across Buick, GMC, and Chevrolet vehicles—where the alternative rack replacement costs average $1,750. The 9701 and 9702 Column Driven Motor Couplings cover 7.6 million Kia and Hyundai vehicles and Toyota and Lexus vehicles respectively—where unit replacement runs $1,100. Torque Sensor Replacements Plews & Edelmann has further expanded the EPS repair category with Edelmann Torque Sensor Replacements. The torque sensor is one of the most critical components in an electric power steering system—it measures steering wheel force and direction, sending real-time data to the EPS control module. When a torque sensor fails, drivers experience uneven steering effort, intermittent warning lights, or complete loss of power assist. Part 9704 covers some Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles, while part 9705 covers some Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6, and Saturn Aura applications. Both feature OEM-replacement design with mounting hardware and alignment marks, backed by U.S.-based ASE-certified technical support. Chamfer Ring Removal Tools Plews & Edelmann said it also developed proprietary Chamfer Ring Removal Tools designed specifically for electric rack and pinion systems, ensuring safe, efficient belt replacement on the highest-volume applications. “By developing a purpose-built repair solution for EPS systems, we’re giving technicians the ability to service a category that was previously replace-only,” said Anthony Holguin, director of category management at Plews & Edelmann. “These products provide opportunity and convenience by turning a $1,000-plus replacement into a repair that can be completed the same day with tools already in the shop. Plus, part stores can rely on a much smaller inventory footprint than stocking several different racks to achieve the same end.” Coverage and Availability Current EPS kits, couplings, and torque sensor coverage spans high-volume domestic and import applications, providing a critical service option where replacement components are scarce or backordered, getting vehicles back on the road quickly. Edelmann EPS Drive Belt Kits and replacement components are part of the Plews & Edelmann broader Total Solution strategy—the philosophy that a complete power steering repair addresses every component in the system: pump, rack, hoses, cooler, filter, and fluid. With over 100,000 application-specific power steering bundles, all-new manufactured hard parts (not remanufactured), and a 100-year/1,000,000-mile warranty on Edelmann Elite products, Plews & Edelmann has built a portfolio designed to eliminate warranty returns by ensuring the repair is done right the first time. Edelmann EPS Drive Belt Kits, Couplings, Torque Sensors, and Chamfer Ring Tools are available now through authorized aftermarket distributors. To learn more or find kits for specific applications, visit the company’s website or call 1-800-770-4639. The post Plews & Edelmann Targets EPS Repair Market appeared first on Counterman Magazine. The Schaeffler division is making two additional Vitesco repair solutions available to the independent aftermarket: a Voltage Stabilization System (VSS) for micro hybrid vehicles from PSA and Toyota, and a 48V DC/DC converter for mild hybrid vehicles from Ford. Schaeffler said the VSS, available immediately, prevents voltage drops that can occur during automatic start-stop operation in micro-hybrid vehicles. The system consists of an Energy Storage System (ESS) with high-performance capacitors and a Power Electronics Unit (PEU). During the engine start process, the capacitors release energy stored while driving within a very short time, compensating for the high-power demand. Starting the engine via a starter-generator requires a comparatively high amount of energy. If this energy is drawn solely from the conventional 12-volt electrical system, the voltage can briefly drop by several volts, causing visible flickering of the vehicle’s lighting and electronic displays. Schaeffler said that by stabilizing the voltage supply, the capacitors ensure smooth engine restarting and contribute to longer battery life, improved driving comfort and compliance with current emissions standards. Schaeffler Vitesco Voltage Stabilization System power electronics unit Schaeffler Vitesco 48V DC/DC Converter: Efficient Energy Management The Schaeffler Vitesco 48V DC/DC converter, available in May, is used in mild-hybrid vehicles equipped with a 48V starter generator and an additional battery to enable more efficient power delivery and boost performance during acceleration. The converter links the vehicle’s 48-volt electrical system with the 12-volt onboard electronics, ensuring stable voltage levels and preventing energy losses. The converter is a component of energy management in mild-hybrid vehicles and for achieving type-approval compliant CO2 emissions. Its bidirectional design allows 12-volt components to be supplied from the 48-volt network while charging the starter battery. Conversely, in the event of a temporary failure, the 48-volt system can also draw energy from the 12-volt network. Schaeffler Vitesco 48V DC/DC converter Significant Potential for the Aftermarket Until now, both the Schaeffler Vitesco Voltage Stabilization System and the Schaeffler Vitesco 48V DC/DC converter were available exclusively as original equipment components. This is a further expansion of the portfolio to include OE-quality Vitesco products. These technologies have been installed in large numbers of vehicles worldwide for many years. The Schaeffler Vitesco Voltage Stabilization System enables a 1:1 replacement in approximately 2.7 million vehicles worldwide from PSA and Toyota. The Schaeffler Vitesco DC/DC converter is used in around 1 million Ford vehicles globally, including Fiesta, Focus and Puma models equipped with the 1.0-liter EcoBoost mHEV engine. “By integrating Vitesco products, we are expanding our portfolio for electrified vehicles,” said Stephan Niese, director, global product management, E-Mobility, at Schaeffler Vehicle Lifetime Solutions. “In this way, we help the aftermarket unlock the potential of e‑mobility and enable workshops to offer their customers professional, future‑ready and profitable vehicle service.” The post Schaeffler Adds Vitesco Components to Aftermarket Portfolio appeared first on Counterman Magazine. SAF-Holland has launched BrakeSight, a brake monitoring system for Haldex air disc brakes that provides continuous, real-time visibility into wear at the wheel end. The company said the system targets fleets seeking more predictable brake service intervals and streamlined repair planning. SAF-Holland said BrakeSight helps fleets schedule brake service at the optimal moment, extend rotor life, avoid unnecessary repairs and reduce overall maintenance costs. How BrakeSight Brake Monitoring Works BrakeSight is an optional feature for the Haldex ModulT air disc brake. As the adjustment mechanism rotates to compensate for pad and rotor wear, the system monitors this movement and translates it into a percentage of remaining pad and rotor life at each wheel end. The sensor connects to a frame-mounted electronic control unit (ECU), which converts the signal and outputs real-time data via CAN. Designed for both tractor and trailer air disc brakes, BrakeSight is J1939 compliant and compatible with all telematics platforms. SAF-Holland works with telematics providers selected by the fleet and offers open integration without exclusive partnerships. Built for Real-World Fleet Conditions SAF-Holland said BrakeSight combines durability with ease of use. Features include: Continuous measurement of brake pad wear; Ultrasonically welded sensor housing for long-term durability; IP6K9K sealing for harsh road and wash-down environments; Sensor warranty of 3 years or 350,000 miles, matching ABS coverage; Operating temperature range from -40 C to 125 C. Because all ModulT air disc brake calipers include the sensor mounting feature as standard, OEMs and fleets can add BrakeSight at any stage without replacing the caliper. This supports flexibility throughout the vehicle life cycle. By providing real-time insight into brake wear, the system helps fleets create more accurate maintenance schedules, reduce unplanned downtime and protect brake components. The company positioned this as a way to lower total cost of ownership and improve uptime. The post SAF-Holland Launches Haldex BrakeSight Brake Wear Monitoring appeared first on Counterman Magazine. TalkRev Launches PartsNow.ai for Heavy-Duty Truck Parts
Counterman posted a topic in Auto Parts News
TalkRev launched PartsNow.ai, an AI-assisted platform designed to help fleets, owner-operators and repair shops find and purchase heavy-duty truck parts more efficiently. The company said the system uses AI-driven chat, voice interaction and visual recognition to identify parts and connect users with a network of distributors. AI Tools Streamline Parts Identification According to TalkRev, the platform allows users to search for parts in multiple ways: Describing the issue or component Uploading a photo of the part or vehicle VIN Speaking directly with an AI agent The system then identifies the part and provides availability and pricing from its distributor network. “Too many mechanics spend their day on the phone calling suppliers just to buy a brake disc or a turbocharger,” said Manna Justin, CEO of TalkRev. “You tell us what you need—type it, say it, or upload a photo of the broken part or the truck’s VIN—and our AI identifies the exact component and sources it from our network of distributors.” Integrated Purchasing and Distributor Network PartsNow said it aggregates inventory from a network of distributors, with a catalog of more than 50,000 parts. Users can complete purchases through a single checkout process, with PartsNow handling the transaction. The company said this approach allows distributors to reach customers without building their own e-commerce systems. Voice and Mobile Interaction The platform also supports phone-based interaction, where users can describe an issue and receive follow-up questions from the AI agent. TalkRev said the system then sends a text message with product details, pricing and a link to complete the purchase. Steve Fultz, president of PartsNow.ai, said the platform is designed to reduce time spent searching for parts and improve access to inventory. On the surface, the primary role of a parts professional is to help our customers identify and select the parts, supplies and services needed to complete a multitude of repairs. However, there are many other duties beyond simple cataloging exercises which separate a true parts professional from a key-punching cashier at the grocery checkout lane. Too often, the general public sees us as simple clerks, but when is the last time you asked a cashier at the register how to perfectly sear that ribeye you just paid for? Our customer base may vary from store to store, but many of us deal with an eclectic mix of clientele each day. These patrons also come with varying levels of technical knowledge or abilities. For most of our commercial customers, we are already a trusted partner. Technicians have usually diagnosed and estimated the labor for a repair job before requesting our expertise, but still lean on their “go-to” parts specialist to get the correct components quoted correctly and delivered to them quickly. These customers “speak our language,” and we are expected to speak theirs, as well. When it comes to the “decidedly DIY” segment of our business, many of the conversations we have can feel like more of a struggle. Often through no fault of their own, this portion of our population finds themselves tackling unfamiliar repair situations, or attempting to navigate diagnostic recommendations or repair instructions that seem to be written in a completely different language. Our daily interactions with repair professionals and coworkers, as well as our own life experiences, have helped us all to build a knowledge base which serves as one of the main reasons our individual services are in demand to begin with. The average consumer views most auto parts as a commodity, so many of our widgets are “all the same” to them. As “car people,” we already know the differences between our products, which ones to recommend, and what we can reasonably expect from them. Even if we don’t physically install components or repair vehicles, we often have a pretty good sense of what it takes to perform the task required, and what else may need to be removed and replaced along the way to the goal of installing the parts we’re handing across the counter. When dealing with a “less-technical” parts buyer, we must be prepared to spend a little more time at the counter or on the telephone. Drawing out all of the relevant information (and filtering out the irrelevant) is often the first step in determining the customer’s needs and intentions. If they already have a sense of direction, a portion of the conversation might be spent explaining (in layman’s terms) why triggering a particular OBD-II code does not automatically mean that they should buy part “X,” or deciphering what a customer means when they request “that round box with four wires, next to the square plastic piece under the left fender.” Within the context of a popular subreddit (r/explainlikeimfive), we can convey fairly complex technical ideas without anyone feeling lost or talked down to. By avoiding jargon or acronyms, our language becomes more accessible for the uninitiated. Comparisons to everyday situations allow for us to find common ground in a discussion. The use of photos, diagrams, descriptive words and even sounds can make “the big picture” come into focus more sharply for nearly anyone. Once we discover a common language, our common purpose is suddenly much clearer! The post Turning Customer Confusion Into Clear Solutions appeared first on Counterman Magazine. View the full article
