      Folks, those of us who operate Merlo telehandlers/loaders work with this equipment every day, and safety is our top priority! Have you noticed that as your machine gets older, some parts start to "slack off" — things like brake pads, tires, and engine components? Once they wear out or age, they might fail unexpectedly someday, and in severe cases, this can compromise operational safety. Just thinking about it gives me a chill!
      Today, I want to talk specifically about brake parts. I’ll share real experiences and data, hoping it helps all of you!
      1. Why Do Brake Parts Directly Impact Safety? Don’t Take This Lightly! Let’s start by asking ourselves two questions: 👉 Do you feel the brakes aren’t as responsive as they were when the machine was new? Does it feel like there’s a delay when you press the pedal? 👉 Has the braking distance gotten longer without you noticing? Sometimes you press the brake in advance, but still have to press harder to stop? If you’ve experienced either of these, you need to be alert! I came across a statistic in Automotive Safety Technology Research that shocked me — approximately 65% of equipment owners ended up in accidents because they didn’t replace faulty brake parts in time when their brake systems had issues! We operate heavy machinery with large loads and in complex working environments; if the brakes aren’t reliable, the consequences are far more serious than with regular cars. So never cut corners on brake parts!   2. What to Look for When Choosing Brake Parts? Avoid These 3 Pitfalls! Many of us either only care about price when choosing parts or just grab any one that fits, but there’s actually a lot to consider: Brand and quality are non-negotiable: Don’t go for cheap, no-name parts to save a few bucks. They lack quality guarantees, wear out quickly, and end up costing you more in the long run — not to mention the safety risks! Must match your machine model: Not all brake pads are suitable for our Merlo units! The wrong model, even if it’s a high-quality part, won’t work properly and could even damage the brake system. Performance differences are real: Surveys show that machines with high-quality brake pads have a 20% faster brake response time than those with regular parts! For us operating heavy machinery, that 20% difference could be the line between safety and danger!  
      3. How to Keep Your Brake System Reliable Long-Term? Focus on These 2 Keys! Keeping your brake system stable and trouble-free long-term isn’t hard — just focus on two things: Regular inspections + timely replacements: Check brake pads, rotors, and brake fluid regularly! Most manufacturers recommend inspecting the brake system once a year, especially the wear on brake pads. Once they reach the wear limit, don’t hesitate — replace them immediately! Choosing the right parts is fundamental: As mentioned earlier, only parts that are both high-quality and model-matched will help your brake system perform at its best. Don’t wait until something goes wrong to regret it!  
      4. Branded Parts vs. Cheap Alternatives: Which Should You Choose? I’m sure many of you have wondered: There are so many cheap brake parts on the market, so why pay more for branded ones? Let me tell you — cheap parts may seem cost-effective at first, but they’re full of hidden risks. Their quality is inconsistent: some wear out in just a few months, while others have poor heat dissipation and are prone to failure. Branded parts, on the other hand, undergo rigorous testing. They’re reliable, last longer, and are actually more cost-effective in the long run! Research in the Journal of Automotive Maintenance also confirms this: Owners who use brake pads from well-known brands have a 30% lower risk of brake failure-related accidents than those who use low-cost alternatives!       In a July 8-9 event in Michigan, Auto Value and Bumper to Bumper named their annual Technician of the Year. This year’s winner is Kevin Kiggins of Pullen’s Garage in Hamilton Township, New Jersey (pictured above). 
      Technicians from across the United States—nominated by distributors in the Auto Value or Bumper to Bumper Certified Service Center networks—gathered for a rigorous competition designed to test both knowledge and hands-on expertise. Finalists faced a customized ASE exam and a series of timed, hands-on challenges facilitated by professional trainers from Garage Gurus. Combined scores from the various testing determined the overall 2025 Technician of the Year Champion.
      The event, which took place over several days in various locations in Michigan, also included tours of the Ford Rouge Factory and the Henry Ford Museum, high-speed driving at the M1 Concourse, and an awards dinner where champions were named.
      Garage Gurus and DRiV are among the sponsors of the program, providing instruction, facilities and sponsorship.
      For Kiggins, the honor came as something of a surprise.
      “I’m blown away, actually,” he said. “I did not expect to come in here and win. I’m just really humbled. I had so much fun but to win takes it to a whole new level. It’s been an awesome experience.”

You avoid comebacks other issues. So we want to train our guys and our gals to make sure that they’re best that we have in the bays and we also want to highlight and reward them for their efforts.”
      Canadian and Mexican Champions
      The event also had segments for Canadian and Mexican Technician of the Year champions. 
      This year’s Auto Value Canadian Champion is Mitch Rauhala, of RNG Auto Care & Repair Inc., Mountain View County, Alberta. Juan Luis Montes de Oca Urbina, of Servicio Montes de Oca, in Michoacán de Ocampo, México was named the 2025 Latin American Champion.
