, we asked distribution leaders to reflect on the successes and challenges of 2022 and share some of their insights for the industry in 2023.

Here’s our Q&A with Sanjay Patel, president of Carquest.

AMN/CM: What did your organization accomplish in 2022 that you are most proud of?

SP: As I’ve transitioned into this new role, I’ve been incredibly impressed by our Carquest team and our family of independent owners, along with their entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to the communities they serve. Our owners are resilient, and they find a way to win because they have hustle and heart.

With that said, there are three accomplishments that stand out, one being our first-annual Women of Carquest networking event. We had so many terrific women store partners in attendance, along with leaders from across our enterprise and industry. The breakout sessions and workshops were invaluable, and we’re already looking forward to hosting this again in 2023.

Another was our Leadership Summit in San Antonio, where we welcomed more than 525 store partners, members of our leadership team and supplier partners. After several years of virtual discussions and smaller group meetings, you could feel the energy in each mainstage session, training and panel discussion, especially as we unveiled our new Carquest logo and brand positioning.

I’m also proud of the passion our store partners have for supporting our military veterans. This was our first year fundraising for Hire Heroes USA, and our store partners helped us raise more than $100,000 to provide employment assistance for veterans entering the workforce.

AMN/CM: What are your thoughts about the business environment for the automotive aftermarket in 2023?

SP: Looking through the lens of our store partners, 2023 provides a strong environment for us to be successful. We’re seeing increases in personal vehicle usage and fleet miles driven. When you also consider advancing vehicle technologies as well as vehicles becoming more resilient, that creates health for our industry. These longer-lasting cars present a great opportunity, as older vehicles will require more repairs and maintenance, creating an increase on parts and supply demand.

And, when you bring in our Carquest independent owners, their product knowledge and unrelenting commitment to serving the customer … that’s where you get the magic!

AMN/CM: How can the independent aftermarket parts and service segments best prepare to repair the car of tomorrow as ADAS, EVs and other technologies become more prominent?

SP: I love this question, because I’m a car guy at heart! My background is in the service industry, and these technologies are so interesting to me.

The big area of opportunity is around training. Our independent owners can partner with Carquest Technical Institute (CTI) to offer training programs to repair shops. We encourage our owners to communicate this to their professional customers.

For a long time, technicians didn’t always have access to quality training. It always seemed to sit in the OE channel. Now, with CTI, Worldpac Training Institute (WTI) and events like the Supplier & Training Expo, we offer training on all makes and models, along with EVs, hybrids, ADAS and other emerging technologies. This increased availability of training helps technicians enhance their knowledge while giving independent repair shops the opportunity to serve a wider segment of the car parc. The fact is, there are a lot of vehicles – especially hybrids – that are hitting that six- to 15-year-old range. These vehicle owners are looking for options. They’re not just defaulting to taking their car to the dealership. When our owners communicate this training availability to repair shops, these shops can offer more services, serve more vehicles and tap into service revenues.

Christian Eckes displayed a perfect example of resilience by posting a 15th-place finish in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Trucks Series inaugural outing on the Streets of St. Petersburg Saturday afternoon. The driver of the No. 91
link hidden, please login to view Chevrolet Silverado RST rallied from two incidents and being caught a lap down to deliver a blue-collar result. Eckes collected 22 points on the day and advanced to ninth in the series standings.
A rain shower on Friday afternoon washed out qualifying and placed Eckes 31st on the grid as the rulebook set the starting lineup. The first 20-lap stage played out relatively uneventful and saw the NAPA Auto Care Chevy methodically advance into the top-15. Eckes sliced his way to 13th by the end of Stage 1 on lap 20 while nursing a lack of forward drive on the tight city thoroughfares.

After crew chief Dave Elenz and the NAPA crew gave Eckes four tires, fuel, and adjustments during the three-minute stage break, Eckes restarted 13th and continued his march forward. However, Eckes was squeezed into the Turn 8 concrete barrier when the No. 5 machine chopped across his nose on lap 26. The contact caused significant damage to the nose of Eckes’ Silverado RST, but the MHR squad made ample repairs to clearance the splitter and fenders despite losing a lap.

Eckes eventually regained his lap with a fortuitous caution on lap 52 and earned the Lucky Dog award. After he received additional repairs, Eckes’ balance remained reasonable and he restarted his climb through the field. More contact from the No. 42 entering Turn 4 on lap 65 sent him for a loop and briefly lost track position outside the top-20. Nevertheless, Eckes righted his No. 91 and regained positions without the aid of a caution. He advanced to 15th at the checkered flag to gain one position in the standings.

“We had some speed in our NAPA Auto Care Chevrolet today,” Eckes said of the top-15 effort. “We had that damage from when the No. 5 got into us, hurt the nose and the splitter and lost all our track position. That really put us behind and down a lap, but the guys made a lot of progress fixing the damage. We had pretty good pace after that, got turned again, it stayed green and still managed to get back to 15th. Like I said, we had some really good pace before all that, just glad we were able to minimize the damage and gain some points.”
      Start / Finish: 31 / 15
      Points Standing / Total: 9th / 69 pts. (-83)

Folks, those of us who operate Merlo telehandlers/loaders work with this equipment every day, and safety is our top priority! Have you noticed that as your machine gets older, some parts start to "slack off" — things like brake pads, tires, and engine components? Once they wear out or age, they might fail unexpectedly someday, and in severe cases, this can compromise operational safety. Just thinking about it gives me a chill!
Today, I want to talk specifically about brake parts. I’ll share real experiences and data, hoping it helps all of you!
      1. Why Do Brake Parts Directly Impact Safety? Don’t Take This Lightly! Let’s start by asking ourselves two questions: 👉 Do you feel the brakes aren’t as responsive as they were when the machine was new? Does it feel like there’s a delay when you press the pedal? 👉 Has the braking distance gotten longer without you noticing? Sometimes you press the brake in advance, but still have to press harder to stop? If you’ve experienced either of these, you need to be alert! I came across a statistic in Automotive Safety Technology Research that shocked me — approximately 65% of equipment owners ended up in accidents because they didn’t replace faulty brake parts in time when their brake systems had issues! We operate heavy machinery with large loads and in complex working environments; if the brakes aren’t reliable, the consequences are far more serious than with regular cars. So never cut corners on brake parts!   2. What to Look for When Choosing Brake Parts? Avoid These 3 Pitfalls! Many of us either only care about price when choosing parts or just grab any one that fits, but there’s actually a lot to consider: Brand and quality are non-negotiable: Don’t go for cheap, no-name parts to save a few bucks. They lack quality guarantees, wear out quickly, and end up costing you more in the long run — not to mention the safety risks! Must match your machine model: Not all brake pads are suitable for our Merlo units! The wrong model, even if it’s a high-quality part, won’t work properly and could even damage the brake system. Performance differences are real: Surveys show that machines with high-quality brake pads have a 20% faster brake response time than those with regular parts! For us operating heavy machinery, that 20% difference could be the line between safety and danger!
      3. How to Keep Your Brake System Reliable Long-Term? Focus on These 2 Keys! Keeping your brake system stable and trouble-free long-term isn’t hard — just focus on two things: Regular inspections + timely replacements: Check brake pads, rotors, and brake fluid regularly! Most manufacturers recommend inspecting the brake system once a year, especially the wear on brake pads. Once they reach the wear limit, don’t hesitate — replace them immediately! Choosing the right parts is fundamental: As mentioned earlier, only parts that are both high-quality and model-matched will help your brake system perform at its best. Don’t wait until something goes wrong to regret it!
      4. Branded Parts vs. Cheap Alternatives: Which Should You Choose? I’m sure many of you have wondered: There are so many cheap brake parts on the market, so why pay more for branded ones? Let me tell you — cheap parts may seem cost-effective at first, but they’re full of hidden risks. Their quality is inconsistent: some wear out in just a few months, while others have poor heat dissipation and are prone to failure. Branded parts, on the other hand, undergo rigorous testing. They’re reliable, last longer, and are actually more cost-effective in the long run! Research in the Journal of Automotive Maintenance also confirms this: Owners who use brake pads from well-known brands have a 30% lower risk of brake failure-related accidents than those who use low-cost alternatives! We operate heavy machinery to work with peace of mind — there’s no need to gamble with safety! 5. A Tip for Merlo Owners with Specific Models: This Brake Pad Kit Works Great! I own a Merlo Compact Telehandler myself. I had a lot of trouble finding good brake pads until I tried the Brake Pad Kit 046917. I highly recommend it to fellow owners with these models: P25.6, P28.7, P32.6, P34.7, P40.17, P40.7. Here are the benefits I’ve personally experienced, listed out for you: ✅ Visibly improved braking performance — firm and responsive when you press the pedal ✅ Eliminates that annoying "squealing" sound during braking — much quieter now ✅ Significantly extends the life of the brake system — no more constant worry about replacing parts ✅ Excellent heat resistance — even during long hours of operation, the brakes don’t feel "soft" ✅ Outstanding durability — I’ve used mine for over 6 months, and wear is minimal ✅ Consistent braking performance even in bad weather or harsh working conditions ✅ Environmentally friendly — meets current standards ✅ Adapts to all driving environments: sunny days, rainy days, and muddy terrain ✅ Reduces wear on brake rotors — saves you money on rotor replacements   Final Thoughts
We operate Merlo machines to work safely and efficiently. Choosing the right brake parts adds an extra layer of safety protection! If you have any tips for choosing parts or have encountered brake-related issues, feel free to share in the comments. Let’s help each other avoid pitfalls and keep safety in check together!
If you’re currently struggling to choose the right brake pads or have any questions about your brake system, don’t guess! Click the link below to learn more about the Brake Pad Kit 046917 — it might just solve your problem.
