MEMA Reveals New Business Structure, Branding Strategy

MEMA, the Vehicle Suppliers Association, presented its new brand and business structure at a virtual member town hall.

North America’s leading trade association for manufacturers of motor vehicle components will now operate under one umbrella organization with two groups: MEMA Aftermarket Suppliers and MEMA Original Equipment Suppliers.

Over the decades, MEMA’s influence expanded as the industry evolved, establishing four divisions: the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Associations (AASA), Heavy Duty Manufacturers Association (HDMA), Motor Equipment Remanufacturing Association (MERA) and Original Equipment Suppliers Association (OESA).

The new structure will create a stronger, more unified organization that can better serve and represent constituents by convening all members under just two groups, MEMA leaders said.

“Rapid changes are impacting our industry. It was the right time to rethink our strategy to better address member needs,” said Bill Long, MEMA president and CEO. “Our member companies have more in common today than ever before. We will provide more effective programming and agility to react to industry changes by streamlining the organizational structure.”

Working with Gyro Creative, a Detroit branding agency, MEMA leadership went through a months-long review of its branding and value proposition, as well as member surveys and competitive analysis. The new look and color palette is modern, progressive, and bold.

“No other organization can compare with MEMA’s longevity, respect, depth of knowledge, and commitment to the vehicle supplier industry,” said Long, who added that MEMA’s mission, vision and dedication to its members and the automotive and commercial vehicle industry have not changed.

“Members will appreciate this structural simplification as it makes it easier for members to access the value MEMA provides today, and we believe it will create more value long-term,” said Megan Gardner, executive director, marketing and communications. “The new brand better represents our forward movement.”

As part of its rebranding and realignment, MEMA also has announced a number of new leadership changes and appointments. The new MEMA Leadership structure is as follows:

  • Bill Long, president and CEO, MEMA
  • Ann Wilson, senior vice president, Government Affairs
  • Paul McCarthy, president and CEO, MEMA Aftermarket Suppliers
  • John Chalifoux, chief sustainability officer and COO, MEMA Aftermarket Suppliers
  • Julie Fream, president and CEO, MEMA OE Suppliers
  • Collin Shaw, chief commercial officer and COO, MEMA OE Suppliers

In addition, a number of internal promotions and appointments have been announced at MEMA, including:

  • Megan Gardner as executive director of Marketing and Communications
  • Liz Goad as executive director of Events
  • Mike Jackson executive director of Strategy and Research

Other developments include:

  • The Center for Sustainability – a new platform for all members as they navigate the increasingly complex processes and requirements of a successful sustainability program.
  • A resource for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion where staff and members can engage in meaningful dialogue and share best practices to develop safe and welcoming business environments.
  • Greater access to member councils, programming, events and MEMA’s advocacy staff in Washington, D.C.

Worldpac, a wholly owned subsidiary of Advance Auto Parts, celebrated the grand opening of its newest warehouse on Feb. 22 in Hatillo, Puerto Rico.
Members of the local community, including Hatillo Mayor Carlos Román Román, attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Located at H-1 Metro Plaza Hatillo, Carr No. 2 KM 87.5 Marginal, Worldpac’s Hatillo warehouse measures more than 30,000 square feet and has the capacity to house more than 400,000 original-equipment and premium-brand automotive parts, serving most vehicle makes and models on the road in Puerto Rico.
The warehouse will support the businesses of local independently owned auto parts stores throughout the western region, with parts deliveries for most customers taking place multiple times per day, six days a week.
“We are very proud to open our second Worldpac warehouse in Hatillo, bringing independent businesses in the western region greater access to original equipment and leading name brand auto parts,” said David Heine, Worldpac executive vice president of sales. “With two locations in Puerto Rico, we can now offer far greater inventory coverage across the island to better serve our customers. We’re also very pleased to employ members of the community at our new facility and we look forward to continued investment in Puerto Rico for years to come.”
Worldpac employs 10 team members at its new facility, with many living locally in Hatillo and surrounding communities. The company also supports independent auto parts stores through its warehouse in Bayamon, which opened in 2010.

MAHLE Motorsport announced four new performance cast PowerPak piston sets for the 6-liter and 6.4-liter Ford Powerstroke.
Developed in direct response to consumer demand for diesel motorsports competition, the new 6-liter pistons are based on the 2004+ design, and the 6.4-liter pistons are based on the MaxxForce design that provides maximum strength and superior durability, according to the company.
“All four sets offer incredible versatility, allowing a daily driver to become a weekend warrior for drag, dyno or pulling competitions,” the company added.
The castings retain the OEM steel top ring insert for the longevity of the top ring groove and are engineered with fully radiused valve pockets to reduce stress and fatigue cracking. Also, a lower compression ratio (.5 to 1.5 points) allows more flexibility for high-output tuning.
They’re designed with performance bowls that reduce erosion issues caused by high pressure, long duration and advanced injection timing, and available with 0.100-inch-deep intake and exhaust valve pockets that work with many performance aftermarket camshafts.
The 6-liter PowerPak set is cast from MAHLE’s proprietary M124 alloy and the 6.4-liter Powerstroke set is cast from M142 alloy. Both are designed for a 4.134 stroke and 6.929 rod. The CR is calculated with 0.0008-inch piston protrusion above deck and 0.059-inch head-gasket thickness.
As with all PowerPak piston sets, the pistons are treated with MAHLE’s proprietary GRAFAL skirt coating for reduced drag and increased scuff resistance. Heavy-duty DLC-coated tool steel wrist pins, clips and a high-performance ring set rounds out the PowerPak.
“Diesel motorsports is all the rage from NHRDA, ODSS to Ultimate Callout Challenge,” MAHLE Motorsport Program Manager, Joe Maylish said. “We’re excited to announce that MAHLE Motorsport is coming in strong for 2023 with new diesel piston sets in time for this year’s race season. So, if you are a seasoned competitor needing an edge or just thinking about competing this year, our new Powerstroke kits are designed to give you the edge on the weekends and improve performance throughout the week.”

When I started my career as a technician, performance-related diagnostics were not that challenging when compared to today’s technology. Most symptoms could be isolated to a fuel or ignition-related problem with a simple road test. Diagnostic equipment was limited to some basic tools such as a timing light, rpm/dwell meter, compression gauge, vacuum gauge, volt/ohm meter, […]
