O’Reilly Automotive reported third-quarter sales of $3.8 billion, a 9% year-over-year increase.

Comparable-store sales rose 7.6%. On a three-year stack, comparable-store sales are up 31.2%, according to the company.

“Our team’s relentless focus on providing excellent service to our customers drove the robust sales strength in the quarter,” O’Reilly President and CEO Greg Johnson said in a news release. “Team O’Reilly once again delivered double-digit growth in our professional business for the quarter, while also driving low single-digit DIY sales growth. Our team’s outstanding top-line performance, coupled with a steadfast commitment to expense control, resulted in a 14% increase in third-quarter diluted earnings per share to $9.17, which represents a three-year compounded annual growth rate of 22%.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of our over 84,000 team members for their continued hard work and unwavering commitment to providing unsurpassed levels of customer service – your dedication to our business and our customers remains the key to O’Reilly’s ongoing success.”

As of the end of the third quarter on Sept. 30, O’Reilly has opened 154 net new stores across 38 U.S. states and Mexico, and the company is on track to reach its goal of approximately 180 net new store openings in 2022, according to Johnson.

“Our team of highly trained and technically proficient professional parts people continues to drive strong new store performance, and we remain very confident in our ability to profitably grow in both existing and new market areas,” Johnson added. “We are pleased to announce our 2023 new-store opening target of 180 to 190 net new stores, an increase over our 2022 growth, as we look forward to expanding the O’Reilly footprint and extending our long track record of profitable growth.”

Advance Auto Parts reported third-quarter net sales of $2.6 billion, a 0.8% increase over third-quarter 2021.
Comparable-store sales decreased 0.7%, which Advance attributed to “increased owned-brand penetration, which has a lower price point than national brands.”
“I want to thank the entire family of Advance team members as well as our growing network of independent partners for their continued dedication,” Tom Greco, president and CEO, said in a news release. “We continue to execute our strategy to drive full year net sales growth and adjusted operating income margin expansion while returning excess cash to shareholders.”
Greco noted that Advance’s “deliberate move to increase owned-brand penetration, which carries a lower price point, reduced net sales by approximately 80 basis points and comp sales by approximately 90 basis points. We also continued to invest in our business while returning approximately $860 million in cash to our shareholders through the first three quarters of 2022.”
The company reiterated its full-year guidance of net sales between $11 billion and $11.2 billion.
“While we continue to execute against our long-term strategic plan, we’re not satisfied with our relative topline performance versus the industry this year and are taking measured, deliberate actions to accelerate growth,” Greco said.

Domestic same-store sales, or sales for stores open at least one year, increased 6.2% for the quarter.
“Our results are a testament to our AutoZoners’ ongoing commitment to delivering exceptional customer service every day,” AutoZone CEO Bill Rhodes said. “ Our retail business performed well this quarter ending with positive same-store sales on top of last year’s strong performance.  And, our commercial-business growth continued to be exceptionally strong at 22%. The investments we have made in both inventory availability and technology are enhancing our competitive positioning.  We are optimistic about our growth prospects heading into our new fiscal year.”
For AutoZone’s 2022 fiscal year, sales were up 11.1% to $16.3 billion, while domestic same-store sales were up 8.4%.
For fiscal 2022, net income increased 11.9% to $2.4 billion and diluted earnings per share increased 23.1% to $117.19.
“We are committed to being the best place to shop for everyone’s automotive needs while delivering on our ongoing promise to be a great place to work,” Rhodes said. “We believe our initiatives will drive growth in the new fiscal year. As we continue to prudently invest capital in our business, we remain steadfast in our long-term, disciplined approach to increasing operating earnings and cash flows while utilizing our balance sheet effectively.”
During the fiscal year, AutoZone opened 118 new stores and closed one in the United States, opened 39 stores in Mexico and 20 stores in Brazil. As of Aug. 27, the company had 6,168 stores in the United States, 703 in Mexico and 72 in Brazil for a total store count of 6,943.
