The American Petroleum Institute (API) has submitted a request to the Auto/Oil Advisory Panel and the API Lubricants Group to add SAE 0W-8 and SAE 0W-12 viscosity grades to the current ILSAC GF-6 specification.

ILSAC GF-6B currently is applicable only to oils meeting the SAE 0W-16 viscosity grade.

As a result, the Auto/Oil Advisory Panel will be called into session and will be co-chaired by the ILSAC chair and the API Lubricants Group chair. The group first will need to evaluate the request and, if accepted, it will undertake the technical efforts of adopting the new viscosity grades into the category, following the procedures detailed in API 1509, Annex C.

Changes to API SP will be handled by the API Lubricants Group in parallel with any changes for ILSAC GF-6.

API said it anticipates that the SAE 0W-8 and SAE 0W-12 viscosity grades can be fast-tracked for quick approval, with the goal for the new oils to be ready for first license by API by the end of 2022.

The existing GF-6 fuel-economy tests have not demonstrated the ability to accurately measure fuel economy in these ultra-low-viscosity grades, according to API. Therefore, API recommends reliance on a recently published fuel-economy test standard from the Japanese Automotive Standards Organization (JASO).

The test standard, JASO M366 (Automobile Gasoline Engine Oils – Firing Fuel Economy Test Procedure), stipulates a test procedure for the measurement of the fuel-economy performances of these very-low-viscosity gasoline engine oils by the measurement of the fuel consumption using a fired engine test. This test is available in U.S. independent labs and has some Base Oil Interchange and Viscosity Grade Read-Across guidelines.

API said its plan is to adopt this test into GF-6 in a manner to be determined by the Auto/Oil Advisory Panel and establish test limits as set forth in JASO M364 (Automobile Gasoline Engine Oils), which specifies the performance of SAE 0W-8 and SAE 0W-12 viscosity-grade engine oils.

Benefits of Adding Lower Viscosities to ILSAC GF-6

There are a number of benefits to adding the lower viscosities to ILSAC GF-6 now, according to API.

First, it would fill an identified gap for licensing of “low-vis” oils in the global marketplace. In fact, calls for introduction of these grades came early in the development of GF-6 but could not be accommodated at that time because the SAE J300 specification on viscosity-grade classification had not yet defined SAE 0W-8 and SAE 0W-12 viscosity grades, and a test to measure fuel economy was unavailable.

Now that a fuel-economy test exists and that test is referenced, coupled with the fact that the test is confirmed to be available in North America, there no longer is a barrier to adopting the grades into ILSAC GF-6/API SP.

“An important additional benefit to licensing these oils is that there is precedent for EPA recognition of ILSAC engine oil specifications on engine approvals,” API said. “While there are currently not many engines on U.S. roads requiring oils of these viscosity grades, adopting them into ILSAC now could make the path of engine approvals a little less burdensome on future engines.”

API works continuously with the auto industry, oil marketers, additive companies and others to meet the lubricant needs of current and future engines.

The Auto Care Association announced that an application programming interface (API) was launched in November, 2024 to select users and is now available to the entire auto care industry. With a continued goal to increase speed and efficiencies for users in the acquisition of the ACES, PIES and IPO reference databases, the Auto Care Association announced in May, 2024 that an API would become available to users in November, 2024.
The Auto Care Association’s ACES, PIES and IPO reference databases (VCdb, Qdb, PCdb, PAdb, and Brand Table) currently and historically have been available to users for download through a manual download process via autocarevip.com in various formats, including Access2007, ASCII, MySQL, SQLServer2008R2, and JSON. Additionally, these databases were historically published with new content monthly but were increased to a weekly cadence (except for the VCdb) in January 2023, with the goal of delivering updated reference database content to users faster.
The API, which is in JSON format, allows users to:
Download updated reference database content as often as daily; Download complete database tables and/or updates (changes) to the database tables; and Automate IT processes for smoother, hands-off data exchange, creating workflow efficiencies. “As we move toward the goal of real time exchange of content between partners via API, the logical first step is leveraging that approach with the reference data we all consume from Auto Care,” said Marc Pappas, chair, technology standards committee and CIO, Federated Auto Parts. “This will serve both to proof the concept and also allow us to make any enhancements before moving forward with more functionality.”
The Auto Care Association will continue to make the reference databases available for manual download through autocarevip.com in the formats Access2007, ASCII, MySQL, SQLServer2008R2 and JSON. However, the frequency of receiving manual database updates will be reduced from weekly to monthly (except Brand Table, which will remain daily), beginning January 2025. The dates of these publications are posted on the

A significant shift in the evolution of engine lubricants is just a few months away. Scheduled to become the new standard on March 31, 2025,
link hidden, please login to viewrepresents the latest evolution in gasoline-fueled passenger car motor oil specifications. GF-7 stands for the seventh generation of motor oil specifications set by the International Lubricant Specification Advisory Committee (ILSAC). This committee is a collaboration of key automotive industry players, including Ford, General Motors, Stellantis, and the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA).
“This standard specifies the minimum performance requirements and chemical and physical properties for engine oils used in spark-ignited internal combustion engines,” said Padu Sreenivas, product manager PCMO,
link hidden, please login to view. “GF-7 will help deliver fuel economy benefits to OEMs and consumers, improved low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) protection with the addition of aged LSPI testing, and improved piston deposit cleanliness, along with other significant performance changes.” Sreenivas says the upgrade in performance is primarily focused on fuel economy. This change is in direct response to increasing pressure to meet stringent fuel economy regulations. As vehicles become more fuel-efficient, consumers will benefit from reduced fuel costs and a lower environmental impact. GF-7 aims to support the automotive industry’s push toward meeting Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, which will become stricter for model year 2026 vehicles.
The inclusion of aged LSPI testing in GF-7 represents a crucial advancement. LSPI has become a significant concern with modern engines, particularly those with turbocharging and direct fuel injection. By offering better protection against LSPI, GF-7 helps safeguard engine performance and longevity.
The updated standards for piston cleanliness also lead to improved engine performance and longer engine life. This means better overall engine health, which translates into cost savings and convenience for vehicle owners.
The improved balance between enhanced fuel economy, piston deposit performance and LSPI protection supports consumers holding their cars longer, enhancing convenience, and reducing maintenance and operating costs.
GF-7 also includes a new sulfated ash requirement (limited to 0.90%) to facilitate the adoption of Gasoline Particulate Filters (GPFs), which are essential for meeting updated emission regulations.
“GF-7 is different from previous specifications not only from a performance standpoint, but also time. Previous ILSAC categories for gasoline-fueled passenger car motor oils have taken a significant number of years to develop and implement. To accelerate from the original proposal of 2028 first license to March 31, 2025, first license is an incredible feat that will enable OEMs to meet the changing requirements.”
The transition does pose some challenges. Implementing the new GF-7 specifications involves complex testing and adjustments to meet the updated performance criteria.
Suppliers and manufacturers must align their products with these new standards, which may require substantial investment and changes in production processes. Sreenivas says Lubrizol has invested considerable resources to ensure a smooth shift to the new standard by the March 31, 2025, licensing date.
As the transition approaches, stakeholders across the supply chain will need to navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by this new standard.
