The ASE Education Foundation is partnering with auto dealer associations to conduct student automotive competitions designed to increase awareness of career opportunities in the automotive industry.
“The goal of the student competitions is to connect businesses with schools and increase the interest of students, encouraging them to work and stay within the automotive field,” said Mike Coley, ASE Education Foundation president. “The most recent competition was held in December in Texas and was a big success with 40 teams competing and over 700 students participating in a career fair. These types of events are another way the ASE Education Foundation is working to reduce the industry’s technician shortage.”
Three student competitions are currently scheduled for 2024, with more being planned. Competitions are scheduled for March in Charlotte and the fall in Houston.
During the December event at Texas Motor Speedway, 117 high school seniors from ASE accredited training programs competed in the North Texas Automobile Dealers Auto Tech Competition. Dealer technicians were paired with each of the 40 teams for several weeks leading up to the event, which featured students trying to diagnose and repair bugged vehicles where the problems were notated on repair orders.
The competition format is flexible and can be modified for local or organizational needs. Unlike traditional student competitions where school instructors train and prepare students, these competitions are based on a partnership between schools and the local businesses.
The students selected for the competition job-shadow at a local employer’s service facility and prepare for the contest alongside the technicians in the shop. A list of specific skills for the students to experience is provided to each employer.
The goal is to provide real-world experience to the students while exposing them to job opportunities in the local market, the foundation noted.

The University of the Aftermarket Foundation is accepting applications for hundreds of scholarships for the 2024-2025 academic year.
Scholarships are available to students training to become automotive, heavy-duty or collision repair technicians or those studying engineering, business, IT/cybersecurity or other courses in preparation for a career in the motor-vehicle aftermarket.
Graduating high school seniors, full-time post-secondary students and former recipients are welcome to apply.
Each completed application is considered for all scholarships where the student meets the qualifications, the foundation noted.
The application deadline is March 31.

Advance Auto Parts Foundation Announces $1.75 Million In Gifts to Aid Military Veterans
02/05/2024 RALEIGH, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Nonprofit organizations providing employment support for women veterans, custom designed homes for injured veterans and frontline support for veterans at risk for suicide are among the recent recipients of gifts announced by the Advance Auto Parts Foundation (AAPF). Totaling $1.75 million, the gifts were made possible by donations to the foundation by more than 100 Advance Auto Parts supplier partners.
This is the second year AAPF has made gifts to Hire Heroes USA of Alpharetta, Ga., Building Homes for Heroes of Island Park, N.Y. and Stop Soldier Suicide based in Durham, N.C., totaling $3.75 million during that time.
“The military veteran community is one of the Advance Auto Parts Foundation’s three focus areas, and we are proud to partner with our suppliers to support critical needs within that community,” said Elisabeth Eisleben, president, Advance Auto Parts Foundation. “Our veterans have earned the opportunity for meaningful employment, appropriate housing and mental health care, all of which are fundamental to their wellbeing.”
A previous gift from AAPF established Hire Heroes USA’s Women Veterans Program, and the latest gift will actively support its ongoing operations. The program features transition specialists and support staff offering career services accommodating the unique needs of women veterans and helped more than 2,000 women veterans find employment last year.
Building Homes for Heroes, a longtime partner of Advance Auto Parts and its supplier partners, will use its gift to fund the Advance Auto Parts Foundation Rapid Response Program which provides financial support to veterans in need, including emergency and time-sensitive situations. AAPF provided funding for the program last year when it aided 130 veterans and their families.
Stop Soldier Suicide will use its latest gift to maintain the 2023 wellness team expansion that was funded by an earlier AAPF gift. The added capacity served more than 300 veterans with zero-cost, personalized, suicide-specific care thus empowering them to move forward.
“Each of these gifts will provide life-changing support to deserving veterans across the U.S.,” said Eisleben. “Our foundation’s leadership was pleased by what was accomplished by our gifts to these organizations last year – literally thousands of veterans were helped – and we look forward to additional support of veterans and their families as AAPF remains focused on veteran needs.”

The ASE Education Foundation recently announced the officers for its 2024 board of directors as well as new board members.
The new chair of the ASE Education Foundation is Joelle Pollak, co-founder of Promotive.
Eric Kenar, manager, technician environment and service technical college for General Motors, will serve as vice chair.
Dwayne Myers, president and CEO of Dynamic Automotive will serve as treasurer, and Brian LaCroix, automotive instructor at Capital Region BOCES Career & Technical Education Center, will hold the role of secretary.
Serving as past chair will be Trey Michael, senior director, office of career and technical education at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, who served as chair in 2023.
Three board members were renominated for additional terms: Drew Jablonowski, content and curriculum manager, Garage Gurus; Justin Morgan, automotive technology chairperson, Sinclair Community College; and Jim Sennett, manager of automotive repair programs for AAA.
Several new board members are beginning their terms in 2024: Brent Franks, president, North Texas Automobile Dealers; Dennis Harden, chief, career and technical education for the Iowa Department of Education; Joe Oleson, director of fleet maintenance, support & equipment, FedEx Freight; Jason Ross, curriculum designer, Volkswagen Group of America; and Juwan Willis, program instructor, Oakland Schools NE Tech Campus.

The ASE Education Foundation recently convened a workshop to review the tasks and tools used by ASE-accredited collision repair and refinish programs in high schools and colleges nationwide.
The review committee consisted of individuals representing vehicle manufacturers, collision repair and refinish shop owners and technicians, instructors and industry trainers and equipment and parts suppliers.
“We want to thank the committee members for working diligently to review and enhance our standards for collision repair and refinish program accreditation,” said Mike Coley, president of the ASE Education Foundation. “The updates reflect what is happening in the industry with new technologies like EVs and ADAS and will help collision repair and refinish students be better prepared to enter the workforce.”
One of the major outcomes was the creation of a new area of accreditation entitled “Collision Repair and Refinish Fundamentals.”
This new area includes 121 distinct skills/tasks and requires a minimum of 300 hours of combined classroom/lab instruction. It draws from the existing areas of accreditation but focuses on five core skill areas highly valued by employers: damaged vehicle disassembly, reassembly, small-dent repair, plastic repair and prep for refinish.
The new option gives schools and local businesses another path to prepare students for success in entry-level positions with skills that are in high demand, according to ASE.
The updated collision repair and refinish standards include new hybrid and electric vehicle safety tasks that are required for all students in ASE-accredited collision repair and refinish programs. Two new task sections in mechanical and electrical components also were also added for advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and hybrid and electric vehicle service procedures.
