For the cover story for the August issue of AMN/Counterman, Editor Amy Antenora spoke with several young aftermarket professionals stepping into leadership roles at their family-owned businesses.

In Part 1 of our series, “Growing the Family Business,” we share the story of Ryan Bickle, vice president of sales for Hays, Kansas-based Warehouse Inc./S&W Supply.

The business known today as S&W Supply was established during the era of the “Dust Bowl” by Claude Sutter and his wife, Helen (Bickle) Sutter. The husband-and-wife team started out small, selling a limited number of automotive parts. In 1954, as the business grew, Claude Sutter moved the business to Hays, Kansas, which offered a more centralized location. At this point, he and Helen were joined in business by Don Wells and his wife, Lyle (Bickle) Wells, and this merger created the company’s current name.

It is here in Hays, Kansas, where the fourth generation of the Bickle family helps lead the business into the next generation. Ryan Bickle, vice president of sales for S&W Supply, says he began working in the family business right out of eighth grade, at the age of 13. “I worked part-time through high school and then when I went to college. After college, I went full-time, so I’ve been in the business for a few years,” Bickle joked.

Bickle describes the best lessons he learned from family members in the business as “the basics” – those traditional Midwestern values of treating others the way you want to be treated. “I try to be available to all employees and customers,” he says. “People still buy from people they trust.”

With nine locations and 90 employees, Bickle says letting staff know they are appreciated also is key to maintaining stable employment today.

“Our employees are our family and we try our best to take care of them,” he says. “I try to work with all employees and help them solve problems within the business. I don’t ask them to do anything I wouldn’t be willing to do myself and I’ve done most jobs within our company.”

Bickle’s father and uncle, DG Bickle and Tim Bickle, the third generation, are the current owners of the business, and his grandfather, Don Bickle Sr., one of S&W’s original founders, still comes into the office daily at 93 years of age. Bickle is helping to train the fifth generation in the family business as well. He has two children – ages 12 and 16 – and this summer, the 16-year-old is working in the warehouse part-time. Tim also has two sons working in the business, who are fourth-generation like Ryan.

Whether it’s a family member or not, Bickle says listening and letting employees know they are valued is key. “I let them know how valuable they are to our business and I listen to them. Without good employees, we would not be here.”

He also credits Federated Auto Parts for the support it provides in maintaining S&W’s longevity: “Our business would not be here today without Federated. Being a part of Federated has allowed us to compete with anyone. The team at Federated is second to none and they are always willing to help.”

The automotive aftermarket industry could be on the verge of one of its biggest shakeups in years.
According to a Bloomberg report, O'Reilly Automotive has submitted a cash offer for the automotive parts division of Genuine Parts Company, a business that analysts believe could be valued at more than $10 billion. While neither company has confirmed the negotiations, the report suggests a decision on the future of the business could come before the end of the summer. Genuine Parts could ultimately sell the division, pursue a spinoff, or retain the business if it determines that is the better long-term strategy.
For the automotive aftermarket, the implications could be significant. Genuine Parts is best known as the parent company of NAPA Auto Parts, one of North America's largest distributors of replacement parts for professional repair facilities, fleets, and do-it-yourself customers. Combining that network with O'Reilly's extensive retail and commercial operations would create an even larger player in an already competitive industry.
A transaction of this size could influence everything from supplier relationships and distribution networks to pricing, inventory availability, and competition with other major retailers such as AutoZone and Advance Auto Parts. Independent repair shops may also be watching closely to see whether any ownership changes affect commercial programs, delivery networks, or parts availability.
At this stage, the report remains based on anonymous sources familiar with the discussions, and there is no guarantee a deal will ultimately be completed. Additional bidders could emerge, or Genuine Parts could decide to pursue a different strategic direction.
      What do you think?
Should O'Reilly acquire Genuine Parts' automotive business? Would this strengthen competition or reduce consumer choice? How could this affect NAPA stores, independent repair shops, and DIY enthusiasts? If you're in the automotive industry, what impact would you expect on pricing and parts availability? Join the discussion below and share your thoughts on what could become one of the largest automotive aftermarket deals in recent history.

link hidden, please login to view has hired Jeremy Whiting as director of business development, supporting the East Coast and Southeast distributor territories. He will be based in Jacksonville, Florida. Whiting brings more than 15 years of experience in the heavy-duty industry and a multigenerational connection to the aftermarket. His role will focus on aftermarket distribution support, distributor engagement and supplier strategies across the two regions.
      Role and Territory Coverage
Whiting will work with distributors across the East Coast and Southeast to strengthen regional coverage and support growth initiatives. His responsibilities include account development, network alignment and coordination around
link hidden, please login to view’s IMPACT Conference and related programs. “I’ve been attending the IMPACT Conference for several years, and the culture of this organization always stood out,” Whiting said. “VIPAR Heavy Duty feels like a family business. When the opportunity appeared, it felt like the right next step at this point in my life and career.”
      Background and Industry Experience
Whiting began his career as an account manager for J.B. Hunt. In 2013, he joined his family’s business, Brookline Machine Company Inc., a long-standing member of the Power Heavy Duty network.
“Some of my earliest memories are going to truck shows and visiting Brookline as a kid,” said Whiting, reflecting on his history in the heavy duty industry. “I can’t imagine being anywhere else.”
At Brookline Machine, Whiting progressed from inside sales/shop tech to operations manager. He managed $3 million in inventory across five branch locations in four states and led development and implementation of the company’s first e-commerce platform.
      Distribution Strategy and Network Alignment
Whiting later expanded his industry experience at Neapco, a driveline supplier. As a regional sales manager, he managed distributor relationships and revenue operations across the East Coast and Southeast U.S., organized customer support efforts, managed rep agencies and oversaw VIPAR Heavy Duty IMPACT Conference participation.
Whiting notes that his transition comes with an advantage—he is already familiar with many distributors across his territory, including those he supported through Neapco and contacts from Brookline Machine. “I’ll be walking into meetings with people I’ve known for years,” he said. “It makes the transition feel natural.”
      Leadership Transition
Whiting fills the position held by Dick Croft, who has served as a director of business development since 2001 and will retire Jan. 31, 2026. The transition supports continuity in distributor relations and regional coverage for the VIPAR Heavy Duty network.
“Jeremy’s extensive experience in the heavy duty aftermarket, combined with his deep understanding of distributor operations, makes him a strong fit for VIPAR Heavy Duty’s culture,” said Joe Meyer, vice president of business development. “He brings a relationship-driven approach, and we are confident Jeremy will seamlessly support our East Coast and Southeast territories.”
