Best Supporting Actor: Gas-Charged Lift Supports

Recommended Posts

The “Best Supporting Actor” Oscar is given annually to a performer who portrays a secondary role in a film, “supporting” the performances of the main characters. Never the primary focus of the story, these characters quietly shine in their own way, helping the lead actors tell their tale of action, adventure, love or mystery. When we hear the name of a classic film, it’s usually the lead actor whom we associate with the title. Joe Pesci is “My Cousin Vinny,” but who can forget Marisa Tomei as “Mona Lisa Vito,” his cranky fiancée (and expert witness) with the automotive knowledge to crack the case wide open! Tomei won an Oscar for that performance, despite being a secondary character. Sometimes, it’s the small roles that really count.

Gas springs, aka “lift supports,” are one of those parts that don’t receive a lot of screen time, but play an important role in providing convenience to vehicle owners. These nitrogen- and oil-filled cylinders aid in the opening and closing of hoods, liftgates and trunk lids, as well as several accessory components.

Like many components, most of our customers don’t think about them until they begin to fail, often in cold weather. As the temperature drops, the cylinder’s gas pressure (its “holding” force) also decreases. For those of us who regularly raise a hood to test a battery or change a bulb, the weak lift support can be a simple inconvenience, or it can be the cause of a nasty whack on the back of the head!

For most applications, gas springs are a straightforward exercise in cataloging. When looking up liftgate struts, occasionally the parts specialist has to determine if the customer wants the supports that help raise and lower the entire liftgate, or just the glass. With the prevalence of power-assisted liftgates on late-model SUVs, the parts specialist also may encounter situations where gas springs play a secondary role to an electric motor-driven unit.

Beyond the catalog, gas springs also are found in a number of “universal” applications. Truck caps, tool boxes and other accessories often feature one or more lift supports, but figuring out the appropriate specifications requires a little extra effort. Extended and compressed length are obvious key features, but the extension force (“weight rating”) is just as critical when selecting a replacement universal support.

The back glass of a truck cap is considerably lighter than the entire liftgate of an SUV, so the two applications require totally different amounts of force. Customers who choose to replace their heavy OE steel hoods with lightweight fiberglass or carbon-fiber hoods also may need to change to a part with less extension force, to prevent stress at the hinge mounting points.

Wherever gas springs are used in pairs, it’s especially important to replace them together. An older, weaker gas spring can cause the “dominant” one to carry more of the load, which may shorten its lifespan. Mismatched struts will exert unequal forces on the door, hood or gate, and can lead to damage. When in doubt, stick to the catalog information (if available), or refer to any existing specification labels/markings on the old unit.

The humble gas spring also played a “supporting role” in one of the most iconic movie cars of all time. The gullwing doors of the DeLorean DMC-12 in “Back to the Future” get an assist from a pair of gas-charged lift supports, as do the “hood” (luggage compartment) and the louvered engine cover on the stock DMC-12s. You may not be able to actually purchase a flux capacitor for your DeLorean, but all of the lift supports are still available in the aftermarket. You don’t even need to set your time circuits back to 1985!

Photo caption: U.S. Reps. Debbie Dingell (left) and Haley Stevens
The Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA) honored U.S. Reps. Debbie Dingell and Haley Stevens as the 2022 recipients of the Joseph M. Magliochetti Industry Champion Award.
The award is a special recognition given to elected officials who have shown outstanding leadership on behalf of automotive and commercial vehicle suppliers.
The awards ceremony was held at the MAHLE Powertrain facility in Plymouth, Michigan.
The MAHLE Powertrain site develops advanced zero-carbon and battery electric solutions for global OEMs across all markets from automotive to marine and power generation. MAHLE Powertrain is the Engineering Services arm of MAHLE, the global Tier 1 supplier.
“Representatives Dingell and Stevens have both worked diligently to promote the interests of our industry,” MEMA President and CEO Bill Long said. “We are lucky to have them in our circle, advocating for policies that allow our industry to prosper.”
Their work carries great significance within the vehicle-supplier industry. Manufacturing automotive parts provides more than 907,000 direct jobs, making it the largest creator of manufacturing jobs nationwide and contributing two-thirds of the value of a new vehicle.
As a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Dingell’s work on behalf of vehicle suppliers includes advocating for automated-vehicle legislation, programs and policies to assist the motor vehicle industry’s transition to a net-zero transportation fleet, and introducing legislation focused on vehicle-technology R&D activities at the U.S. Department of Energy.
The congresswoman also led efforts to ensure the passage of the CHIPS Act language, which provides federal funding to increase domestic semiconductor chip production.
“It is truly an honor to receive the 2022 Joseph M. Magliochetti Industry Champion Award alongside my friend, Congresswoman Haley Stevens,” Dingell said. “MEMA and the supplier industry play such a critical role in the auto industry, employing generations of hardworking men and women in Michigan and contributing billions of dollars to our nation’s economy. Together, we will continue to keep the United States at the forefront of innovation and technology, and ensure that we have a strong and healthy auto industry.”
In the House, Stevens helped improve the auto rule of origin provisions of the USMCA and built congressional support for this vital measure. She is a leading House advocate of the CHIPS Act, and its legacy chip provision for the motor vehicle and parts sector.
Stevens has an impressive track record of working across the aisle to deliver for Michigan’s manufacturers supporting broad competitiveness, manufacturing and business priorities in the House and often articulating these to House leadership. As chair of the House Science Committee Research & Technology Subcommittee, she has championed federal funding and training programs to assist the auto parts sector in its transition to an EV future.
“I am unbelievably honored to receive this recognition. I’ll never stop advocating in Congress for our Michigan manufacturers and automotive suppliers,” Stevens said. “They are truly the backbone of the booming SE Michigan economy and are leading the industry in innovating our future.”
The Industry Champion Award is presented in the memory of Joseph Magliochetti, a former MEMA chairman who also served as the chairman and CEO of Dana Corp. until his death in 2003. He was widely recognized as a leader and a visionary in the supplier industry, and as MEMA chairman, he left a legacy of advocacy and outreach on behalf of all vehicle suppliers.
Automotive and commercial vehicle suppliers are the largest employer of manufacturing jobs in the U.S., contributing nearly 3% of the U.S. gross domestic product.

The Charles Dickens classic “A Tale of Two Cities” produced one of the most famous opening lines in all of literature: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times … ”
More than 150 years after “A Tale of Two Cities” was published, the phrase is an apt description of what life has been like for aftermarket suppliers, distributors and retailers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As Paul McCarthy, president and CEO of the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA), kicked off the 2022 AASA Vision Conference in Dearborn, Michigan, he observed that the line “rings true in this age of uncertainty.”
“It has been some of the hardest times to simply do our jobs – to just get our products to the customer – yet it has also been some of the greatest prosperity that the aftermarket has ever experienced,” McCarthy said.
Stimulus-driven DIY sales have led to the best of times for the aftermarket’s publicly traded parts retailers, and they reported record growth in 2020 and 2021. At the same time, supply chain disruptions have made it challenging for some suppliers and distributors to get their hands on parts and raw materials.
“Typically, part of our industry’s appeal is our slow, steady, reliable growth – our consistent cash-flow generation,” McCarthy said. “During the pandemic, we seem to have found another level of demand for our products. And we’ve also been in a battle for availability. The reality over the last two years is that if you could get the part to the customer, they would likely buy it.”
While the past two years have been prosperous for many aftermarket participants, it’s also been the worst of times in the sense that the economy has been hit with “a flock of black swans.” Even before this once-in-a-century pandemic hit, the aftermarket was grappling with tariffs on imported Chinese goods  as well as the biggest changes to U.S. trade policies in decades.
“We haven’t had a supply chain disruption of this magnitude for 75 years,” McCarthy said. “It’s been over 40 years since we’ve seen inflation like this. It’s been decades since we’ve seen a job market this tight. If that wasn’t enough, members tell us that we’ve experienced some of the highest levels of government intervention in the aftermarket, maybe in our history.”
On top of that, there’s a land war in Europe, and U.S.-Sino relations are as tense as they’ve been in decades. Potential curveballs on the horizon include more interest-rate hikes, gas-price increases and the specter of Russian cyberattacks.
Still, although it’s “an environment where it may not be easy for us,” it’s one “where we can do very well.”
“Our ability – despite all these obstacles – to fill orders, to keep our businesses running, to sustain our teams, to work together up and down the value chain, it’s frankly amazing how well the aftermarket has performed,” McCarthy added. “It proves our resilience and our endurance. So don’t expect things to get any easier, but the aftermarket and aftermarket suppliers, we’ve shown that we matter.”
      A New Golden Age?
Despite all the “bumps in the road,” McCarthy posed this question to AASA Vision attendees: “Is there a chance that these strong sales that we’ve seen are not a blip, that instead they are the start of a new golden age?”
“The transformative cultural shifts that we’re seeing as a result of the pandemic, we think they bode well for the future of the aftermarket – that we are leaving the pandemic with a more auto-centric lifestyle than when we went into it,” McCarthy asserted.
To buttress his point, he noted that used-car prices are higher than they’ve been since World War II; there are more than 280 million vehicles in operation in the United States; and the miles-driven recovery “has exceeded all forecasts.”
With commuters and travelers still fearful of mass transportation, “Americans are moving toward more car-centric locales and lifestyles,” he added.
“We see it in consumers’ desire for more space. We see it in the house prices, in people moving to the West, to the South, to smaller cities, to exurbs. Coming out of COVID, where most Americans now seem to want to live, they need a car or a third or a fourth car. They need us, the aftermarket.”
While technology might be a source of angst for some, “this unstoppable march of increasing vehicle content has been incredibly powerful for the aftermarket ticket,” McCarthy declared. “And we think that will continue.”
And the increasing in-vehicle connectivity “is making our time in the car more entertaining, more productive, more appealing.”
“We would argue that this is a global opportunity that the pandemic underscored to consumers around the world: the safety, the appeal of individual transport and the freedom that it brings. So we think we could look back in 2040, 2050, and say that this was the start of a new golden age of transportation. And we could say that we grabbed this opportunity and we created new ways forward.”
