In link hidden, please login to view, we gave leaders from the major distribution groups and trade associations an opportunity to reflect on the most critical issues affecting the automotive aftermarket. For the second year in a row, we let distribution leaders “riff” on these topics in their own words.
Here’s what Bill Hanvey, president and CEO of the Auto Care Association, had to say about the ongoing battle to pass Right-to-Repair legislation – in Massachusetts and at the national level.
“A rising tide lifts all boats” is a quote commonly attributed to President John F. Kennedy to suggest that investing in economic development can benefit everyone who participates in the economy. The same sentiment is true for the more than $400 billion auto care industry, as evidenced by our recent joint channel forecast that showed our industry outperforming our expectations in 2022.
That’s how we roll: Collaboration is critical between supplier, distributor and end user to ensure that we’re meeting the needs of our industry from the top of the supply chain down to the consumer.
It’s easy to get comfortable when the numbers are this good and it’s hard to keep up with demand … everything appears to be firing on all cylinders (of course, an automotive analogy). While it’s important to celebrate our success, it’s also critical for all of us to be engaged to thwart the biggest threat to our industry since its inception.
On June 12, a representative from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
link hidden, please login to view instructing them to ignore the Massachusetts Data Access Law (Right to Repair Act) that was approved by 75% of the voters because they interpreted it to be federally pre-empted by the national Safety Act. This letter came two years after the federal court in Massachusetts asked NHTSA to comment on the trial – which they opted not to do. This is a now a rallying cry for all of us, and I’m afraid that unless we activate our entire industry around this issue, we all will lose … especially the consumer. Shop owners and DIYers are already experiencing instances where data is not made available by the automakers, and this will continually escalate should we not pass Right to Repair at the national level.
The phrase “Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country” was actually first used as a typing drill in the mid 19th century – not shouted in the House of Burgesses by Patrick Henry as is commonly believed. We now have a new rallying cry of, “Now is the time for all men and women to defend the auto care industry and consumer choice,” which is critical to our long-term viability as an industry.
Here’s how you and your company can take part in the most important battle our industry has ever faced:

Here’s what Sue Godschalk, president of Federated Auto Parts, had to say about Federated’s accomplishments thus far in 2023.
Federated Auto Parts got off to an exciting start at the beginning of the year with the announcement of our newly formed joint venture with the Aftermarket Auto Parts Alliance. Both groups immediately set to work as The Federated Alliance by evaluating areas where the combined membership could benefit through the elimination of duplication in areas such as data management, communication, education and training, and other important initiatives.
In March, we were excited to have our new co-venturers join us for the annual Automotive Parts Services Group (The Group) membership meeting, along with our partners from The Pronto Network, for an exciting four days at the Gaylord National Harbor in Maryland just outside of the nation’s capital. Having The Federated Alliance members and The Pronto Network members in attendance, as well as representatives from our best APSG supplier partners, the meeting attendance was well over 1,000 and by far our largest meeting ever. The meeting theme of “E Pluribus Unum” (Latin for “out of many, one”) fit the location and best describes The Federated Alliance and The Pronto Network coming together with many new and exciting initiatives for the coming year.
On March 1, the Federated Auto Parts marketing team kicked off the Federated “Suite-Stakes” program, which has become an exciting annual program for our members and their service-provider customers. Suite-Stakes ran through June 30 and is always a fun way for Federated members to grow sales with existing customers and gain new business. In the past two years, Federated awarded more than 9,000 prizes, and this year is no different with a long prize list featuring new prizes, including sales team and member rewards and customer training events, such as a trip to Florida for a three-day hybrid/EV training workshop held at the new Group Training Academy Training & Research Center. With new automotive technologies and stricter regulations for environmental compliance on the horizon, education and training will continue to be a priority for Federated in the long term.
Another exciting addition to the Federated marketing program is our new sponsorship of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car racing series. The work area for each race is now known as the “Federated Car Care Work Zone” and receives a lot of visibility as the professional crew members work on the cars during the 87-race season that can be viewed on DIRTVision. This sponsorship ties in perfectly with the very popular “Get Dirty with Kenny” dirt-track racing experience we have conducted year after year for lucky Federated customers.
As the saying goes, one year equals 365 opportunities, and as new-vehicle sales continue to be low and the existing vehicle age high, I am optimistic that the second half of 2023 will be strong and full of opportunities for our industry and our membership.

ADVANCE AUTO PARTS OFFERING STUDENTS A CHANCE TO WIN A ‘FUEL RIDE TO COLLEGE’ AND FREE ‘OFF-TO-CAMPUS’ IN-STORE SERVICES
Incoming college freshmen can enter to win a “fuel ride” – four years of free gasoline – after new national survey reveals gas is a significant financial strain for majority of students
RALEIGH, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Advance Auto Parts (NYSE: AAP), a leading automotive aftermarket parts provider, announced today that it will help advance the education of incoming college freshmen, and ease their financial burden, by awarding 10 “fuel rides” in the form of four years of free gasoline to 10 lucky winners of the “Fuel Ride to College” sweepstakes.*

Advance’s “Fuel Ride to College” sweepstakes arrives right on time as prices at the pump tick up. New data from Atomik Research reveals that 67% of college students cite gasoline for their automobile as being an expense that puts the most financial strain on their wallet**, while 76% of parents of incoming freshmen say they are worried about their student’s ability to afford gas.***
Parents also have significant anxiety regarding the safety of their college students when it comes to the automobiles they operate, according to Atomik Research surveys commissioned by Advance. Nearly two-thirds (63%) of parents of incoming college freshmen feel very or extremely anxious about their student’s safety when it comes to maintaining their cars and about three-fourths (73%) of parents have more anxiety about the car safety of their incoming college freshman than they did during the child’s senior year in high school.
Parents’ anxiety is warranted as more than half of college students admit to having ignored dashboard alerts and notifications, including “check engine” and “low battery warning,” according to the survey.
To help ease this anxiety, Advance and its team of friendly automotive experts are offering students and their parents free “off-to-campus” in-store services at Advance stores nationwide, including free battery testing and installation, wiper blade installation and check engine light scanning.
In addition to awarding 10 four-year “Fuel Rides to College,” Advance will also award 20 additional winners a $100 Advance gift card to stock up on essentials to help keep their automobiles in reliable shape this school year. If interested in learning more, visit

Additional data from the Atomik surveys validate the value of a “Fuel Ride to College:”
One-third (33%) of students cite that a lack of gas money or the cost of gas has deterred them from going to class, the library or study groups, while 60% of incoming college students’ parents express this exact worry: that the cost of gas will deter their child from going to class or education-related activities. Many college students choose between fueling their body and their automobile: more than one-third (36%) say they have compromised or cut back on groceries to fit gas money into their budget. One-quarter (25%) of college students say they’ve had to cut back or compromise school supplies to fuel their automobiles. Advance has also partnered with auto racing driver and television personality Arie Luyendyk Jr. to encourage incoming freshmen to enter for a chance to win a “Fuel Ride to College” and spread the word about Advance’s commitment to providing parents peace of mind via complimentary in-store services. In 1986, Counterman announced its first “Counterman of the Year.”
While the name has changed slightly, the intent of the Counter Professional of the Year hasn’t: The award recognizes America’s most trusted “go-to” men and women behind the parts counter.
“Believe it or not, the personnel working behind the counters in the nation’s auto parts stores have never been recognized on an industry-wide basis,” former Counterman Editor Larry Silvey wrote in the February 1986 issue.
That’s no longer the case, of course, as we’re in the 38th year of the Counter Professional of the Year. But we need your nominations to keep the program strong and vibrant.
If you’re chosen as the Counter Professional of the Year, you’ll receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Las Vegas for AAPEX 2023, including a VIP experience at the Babcox Media/WIX Filters “Night of Excellence.” You’ll also be featured in the December 2023 issue of Counterman.
Nominating a counter pro (or yourself) is easy. Just visit
