Check Engine Light On? Could Be A Faulty O2 Sensor

Recommended Posts

According to the annual CarMD® Vehicle Health Index™ one of the most common check engine light repairs is replacing the oxygen sensor. This relatively minor repair can be costly if neglected, leading to as much as 40 percent lower fuel efficiency, causing further damage to your vehicle’s exhaust system and adversely impacting the environment.

“Vehicles with faulty oxygen sensors typically seem to drive and handle well, but the malfunction can dramatically decrease fuel efficiency and lead to costlier repairs if ignored,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “A faulty oxygen sensor means your vehicle is emitting more pollutants and if the check engine light is illuminated, it may not pass vehicle emissions testing in those states requiring it for vehicle registration.”

A vehicle’s oxygen sensors are mounted in the exhaust system; they monitor the catalytic convertor’s operation and the level of oxygen in exhaust gases to maintain efficient engine operation. The best way to prevent an oxygen sensor failure is to follow a regular service schedule, including routine oil changes.

Unlike the past nine years of the annual CarMD

, costly catalytic converter replacement edged out O2 sensor replacement as the most common check engine light repair. Catalytic converters do not typically fail unless maintenance and other repairs are ignored or the vehicle is older. Average vehicle age has increased from 10.6 years to 11.7 years over the past decade, contributing to this outcome.

“It is important that car owners check the reason for an illuminated check engine light without delay and make necessary maintenance to avoid more costly repairs, like catalytic converter replacement, down the road,” said White. “If you find your vehicle needs service, call your trusted local repair shop as automotive repair is considered an essential service.”

link hidden, please login to view Cathie Wood of Ark Investment Management said Tesla’s move into the more profitable business of self-driving taxi platforms would boost its share price by about 10 times. That echoes years of optimism about Tesla’s self-driving business.

Wood believes the self-driving taxi ecosystem will be worth $8 trillion to $10 trillion globally, with platform providers such as Tesla taking half of that. Speaking on the Tiger Money podcast, Wood revealed that investors are shifting the way they value Tesla, not just as an electric car maker, but also the potential of its self-driving taxis.   Wood said: “The autonomous taxi platform is the fastest growing AI project today, and Ark is primarily valuing it based on Tesla’s autonomous driving potential. If we’re right, there’s plenty of room for Tesla’s stock price to grow.”   Optimism over Tesla’s efforts to bring self-driving taxis to market has helped its shares recover a 43 per cent fall in the year to April 22.   Wood said the self-driving taxi network will provide A “winner-takes-all” opportunity, with providers that can get passengers from point A to point B in the safest and fastest way winning the lion’s share of business. She added that autonomous taxi network providers will be able to capture 30 to 50 percent of the revenue generated by fleet owners on the platform, resulting in “growing explosive cash flows” and profit margins of more than 50 percent. This is different from the “make and sell” or “one-off” business model of traditional car manufacturing.   “We think people are missing that: the size of the opportunity, the speed of expansion, and how profitable it will be,” Wood said. She expects Tesla to dominate the U.S. self-driving taxi market.   Last week, Tesla had a weighting of more than 15% in the $6.5 billion Ark Innovation ETF. Wood said the fund has taken some profits off Tesla, allowing the stock to trade above its normal cap because they believe Tesla is about to reveal more information about its self-driving taxi project.   According to a Bloomberg report on July 18, Tesla has delayed the launch of its self-driving taxi by two months to October, originally scheduled for August, to give the team more time to produce more prototypes. The news sent Tesla shares down 8.4%, their biggest one-day drop since January. But Wood doesn’t mind.   “We may be closer to the self-driving taxi opportunity than we are further away, and Musk may want to do better and think it is possible by October,” Wood said.    Fang’s valuation model does not yet take into account Tesla’s potential in China or in humanoid robotics and energy storage. In April, Tesla, which reached a mapping and navigation deal with Chinese tech giant Baidu Inc and met data security and privacy protection requirements, has already received approval in principle from Chinese officials to deploy its self-driving assistance system to China, the world’s largest auto market.

Theory can only take you so far when formulating engine oil. Complex modeling is an important step, but it can’t duplicate the magic that happens inside the cylinder. Operating conditions, duty cycles, driver behavior—it all impacts how an engine ages. As it does, deposits form within the engine. The carbonaceous compounds that form on various engine components, including pistons, valve trains, and timing chain covers are a natural occurrence; a consequence of aging that result from the breakdown of oil components at high temperatures, particularly during the combustion process. The highest temperatures occur on the metal surfaces within the engine, where these deposits tend to adhere.
“There are some deposits that are temporary that you can wipe off with your finger, and there are others that can get very thick,” explained Dr. Michael Warholic, global technology director, Valvoline Global Operations. “The bad thing about deposits—and actually there are several bad things—are that, first of all, they insulate and you can’t get the heat out.
      “They also cause friction.”
Friction is exceptionally bad, especially if you’re formulating oil. Thick deposits can clog oil passages, restricting the flow of oil to critical engine parts. This leads to inadequate lubrication, exacerbating wear and potentially causing engine failure. Traditionally the role of engine oil has been to slow down engine deposit development, but in concocting its latest engine-protecting blend, the Valvoline team stumbled upon something … surprising.
“We were trying to basically minimize deposits, engine wear, friction and heat, and oil formulation is a balance, so you have to pick and choose what you want it to do,”  Warholic  explained. “What we didn’t know was before the testing that it would remove and reverse the process–that is something you can’t predict by modeling. Restore and Protect removed engine deposits.
“I had never seen anything like it before, and I have eight years at Valvoline and 16 years at a company that makes the additives used in oil formulation.”
Valvoline’s Restore and Protect is a fully synthetic motor oil that aims at both older, high-mileage vehicles (restore) and new vehicles (protect). While Warholic was tight-lipped about the specific blend of additives within the oil, Valvoline has noted two proprietary technologies–Active Clean, which removes deposits and Liqui-Shield, which prevents deposit formation.
It’s not just marketing—at a recent event, Valvoline put Restore and Protect-cleaned pistons on display. Take a look:
Valvoline validates its oils through industry standard tests such as the GF-6 SP specification, which uses a Chrysler Pentastar engine to measure deposit formation. These tests provide a benchmark for oil performance, ensuring that the oil meets or exceeds industry requirements.
“Exceeds” is the key word. Warholic was quick to point out that these types of tests are merely the baseline within the oil market, not the high bar that oil manufacturers should seek to leap over.
“We want to exceed the API specifications and excel in all categories. Restore and Protect is already GF-7 capable, which is great,” he said.
Real-world testing is crucial. For instance, a Ford Mustang was subjected to extensive testing with Restore and Protect, showing significant reductions in wear and deposit formation. The testing extended to various engine components, including the timing chain cover, oil pan, and valve train, demonstrating the comprehensive benefits of the oil. The team also ran Restore and Protect in a Ford Explorer with more than 500,000. “And we also did a chassis dynamometer test where we put a vehicle on rollers basically and ran it 300,000 miles,” Warholic said. “Restore and Protect actually cleaned up the entire engine.”
For automotive aftermarket professionals, understanding the use of high-performance oils can lead to better engine health, improved engine operating efficiency,  reduced maintenance costs and happy customers.
“We’re trying to maximize engine life,” Warholic said. “Vehicles are getting older. The vehicle life on the road is getting older. Vehicles may change owners and engines are going to be running longer. For us, it’s about maximizing engine performance so that you don’t lose fuel economy, you don’t lose efficiency, and you don’t break down on the highway.”
