Don't Assume the PCM Is Bad
Before replacing the PCM, it's worth checking a few basics:
Battery voltage and charging system
All PCM power and ground circuits
Fuses and relays
Wiring harness damage
Corroded or loose connectors
CAN Bus communication
Water intrusion around the PCM
I've seen situations where a damaged ground cable or corroded connector caused symptoms identical to a failed PCM.
Ford Models That Come Up Frequently
Certain Ford platforms seem to generate more PCM-related discussions than others, including:

That doesn't necessarily mean the PCM is defective—it simply means these vehicles are commonly diagnosed when electrical or drivability issues appear.
When Replacement Becomes Necessary
If you've confirmed the PCM itself has failed, replacing it isn't always as simple as plugging in another module. Depending on the model year and vehicle, the replacement PCM may require:
VIN programming
Security (PATS) programming
Calibration updates
Idle or transmission relearn procedures
Installing an incorrect or unprogrammed module can prevent the vehicle from starting or lead to additional fault codes.
