You may notice a different type of show car at the

 this year.

It only has 140 horsepower, with a four-speed automatic transmission, and it clocks in at 20 feet long. This car is not arriving at the show on a trailer. Instead, it’s coming from Akron, Ohio, on its own power.

The car and its adventures over the next nine days promise to be a rolling testimonial for the $1.6 trillion global industry that keeps more than 1.3 billion vehicles on the road: the automotive aftermarket.

Over the past five months,

and 16 sponsors have rehabilitated a 1989 Cadillac Brougham so it can make the epic 2,500-mile journey to be a part of AAPEX 2022. The journey from the used-car lot to the AAPEX show floor is being documented in a six-episode video series, starting on Sept. 19, called “The Road to AAPEX.”

The finale will air on Oct. 31 just prior to the AAPEX opening reception. All episodes will be available on the

“This project car is not about quarter-mile times or chrome,” said Randy Loeser, executive director of content and video services, Babcox Media. “The project is a proof of concept to show how the auto care industry keeps the world moving, no matter what they drive.”

The Caddy

When Babcox Media’s automotive video producer Joe Keene spotted the listing on Craigslist for a 1989 Cadillac Brougham, he knew it would be the perfect car for the journey to Las Vegas. The Brougham had more than 180,000 miles on the odometer. Unfortunately, it also had a leaking transmission, no A/C and the air suspension was no longer working.

“After a quick inspection of the car, it was not as bad as I thought,” said Keene. “But we had to make it reliable, safe and able to handle conditions like desert driving.”

The rehabilitation process addressed all mechanical systems on the vehicle. In addition, the body was restored with new parts and paint. The complete process will be shown on the first episode of “The Road to AAPEX.”

“Many people think it would be difficult to get parts for a 33-year-old car,” said Keene. “However, all of our sponsors still manufacture and stock parts for this aging vehicle.”

The Route

“The Road to AAPEX” begins in Akron, Ohio, at Babcox Media’s headquarters. Keene will then travel to Joliet, Illinois, to pick up the historic Route 66. Keene will take the “mother road” to visit historic roadside attractions, parts stores and shops in eight states. The trip will cover more than 2,500 miles in nine days.

“The Road to AAPEX is an incredible demonstration of the freedom and choice that our industry provides Americans, every single day,” said Bill Hanvey, president and CEO of the Auto Care Association. “Every part of our supply chain enables this freedom to go anywhere, anytime: from parts manufacturers, to distributors, to retailers and shops. There’s nothing more quintessential than a road trip across America, fueled by these essential businesses. Without the aftermarket, the affordability and convenience the motoring public relies on wouldn’t be possible – and we are proud to be that anchor for the consumer for generations to come.”

After reaching the Grand Canyon, Keene will head north to Las Vegas and AAPEX. Following its debut at AAPEX, the Cadillac is being gifted to a U.S. Military veteran through the

, with the whole project truly capturing the spirit of the aftermarket from start to finish.

“The Road to AAPEX looks different for each member of our great industry, from snowy mountain roads to sandy, beachside highways or the classic Route 66. However, these journeys all have one thing in common – the strength and power of the aftermarket behind each vehicle,” said Paul McCarthy, president and CEO of the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association. “AAPEX is the home for each part, tool, chemical, technology or component needed to safely maintain America’s 280 million vehicles. We are proud of our industry, and to serve the millions of people who rely on the aftermarket on their own ‘roads to … ’ every day. I am glad AAPEX provides us with the opportunity to come together to build the relationships we need to grow our businesses.”

A resilient effort by Christian Eckes and the
link hidden, please login to view team salvaged a top-10 finish in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS) opener at Daytona International Speedway on Friday night. The driver of the No. 19 NAPA Auto Care Chevrolet Silverado RST finished 10th despite being involved in three multi-truck accidents in the second half of the event. His 10th-place result earned him 39 points and places him third in the NCTS championship standings.
Eckes was buried deep in the field after qualifying 25th, but he instantly darted toward the front once the green flag flew. Eckes’ aggression was immediately evident as he made three-wide moves on the opening lap. He narrowly avoided a multi-truck accident on lap six and joined the top-10 on lap 13. A one-lap dash to close Stage 1 saw Eckes grab three points in eighth position on lap 20.

Crew chief Charles Denike kept Eckes on track during the caution to inherit track position and found themselves in the mix for the race lead when Stage 2 went green at lap 27. Eckes was in the thick of the battle for the race lead and pushed his new MHR teammate Tyler Ankrum to the Stage 2 win. Eckes pocketed another nine points by running second at the end of the segment on lap 40.

Under the second-stage caution, Eckes pitted for four tires and fuel and restarted 12th on lap 45. A caution on lap 57 allowed him, and several other competitors, to make their final stop for fuel. Eckes restarted 16th on lap 62 and rocketed to the front with some aggressive drafting. He briefly took the lead on lap 72 but was involved in an accident on lap 79 while running second. Despite losing a lap, the NAPA Auto Care team made ample repairs and allowed Eckes to regain his lap on lap 86. With five laps to go, he suffered minor damage in an incident which set up an overtime restart. After restarting 24th with two laps remaining, Eckes drove halfway back through the field but was swept into a track-blocking accident on the final lap and suffered significant damage.

Eckes was able to refire his Chevrolet Silverado RST and drove back around to the checkered flag to finish 10th and start the season just four points out of the championship lead.

“Tonight was a wild night, for sure,” Eckes said. “We were able to drive our NAPA Auto Care Chevrolet up to the front a couple times and were going to be one of the trucks to beat. I was able to work well with our teammates for a while tonight until we got turned off Turn 4 there with 20-to-go or so. I’m proud of the guys on our NAPA team to get it fixed and got our lap back. We never gave up tonight and we saved a ton of points because of it.”

      Brad Sweet and the
link hidden, please login to view No. 49 team returned to action for the 2024 season in spectacular fashion, winning at the DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida.
Four nights of racing began on Wednesday with the Big Cat showcasing his skills right from the start. The Kasey Kahne Racing driver qualified fourth in Flight A with a blistering time of 13.513 seconds. He continued the momentum in his heat race, securing a second-place finish and guaranteeing him a spot in the Fast Pass Dash. Sweet dominated the dash, picking up the win after starting on the pole. In the first main event o f 2024, the NAPA No. 49 machine proved unstoppable for 25 laps, earning the win and solidifying Sweet’s status as a giant of the sprint car world.

On Thursday night, however, a different story unfolded for the five-time champion. Sweet qualified fifth in Flight B, posting a solid time of 13.430 seconds, but his heat race presented a challenge. He started third but slipped to fourth, relegating him to a 14th-place starting position in the feature. He ultimately finished 15th,  determined to bounce back on Friday night.

On Friday, the NAPA team hit the reset button and prepared for another shot at a win. Sweet posted a time of 13.359 seconds in qualifying, securing the third spot in Flight B and setting a strong tone for the evening. During heat race action, competitor David Gravel ran Sweet up the track, forcing him over the cushion and into the brakes of the No. 49 machine. He regained momentum, though, and ultimately finished third after starting second. Friday’s feature race truly highlighted Sweet’s racing prowess as he battled his way through the field from a 10th-place start to finish on the podium in third.

On the final night of the DIRTcar Nationals, the NAPA No. 49 team had one last shot at a $20,000 payday. The Big Cat hit the charts at 13.452 seconds in qualifying, placing him fifth. In his heat race, Sweet charged from third to second, placing him in the dash. Although he did not advance from his eighth-place starting spot in the dash, Sweet continued undeterred into the feature race. He stood out among the fierce competition, climbing from an eighth-place starting spot to another podium finish of third. Sweet and the NAPA team ended the weekend third in overall event points.

Next up for the Sweet and the No. 49 team is the start of the High Limit Racing season at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa.
