Chase Elliott and the No. 9 Kelley Blue Book team qualified fourth for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series playoff race at Kansas Speedway.
The 29-year-old driver consistently raced inside the top 10, finishing stage one in third and stage two in fourth.
In the final stage, a caution with 14 laps to go prompted mixed pit strategies. Crew chief Alan Gustafson made the call for four tires while others took two.
The race ultimately came down to two overtime attempts, with Chase driving from 10th to secure the victory and lock himself into the Round of 8.
The triumph is Elliott’s 21st Cup Series victory and his second at Kansas Speedway. It’s also his second win of the season.
Chase Elliott and the No. 9 Kelley Blue Book team qualified fourth for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series playoff race at Kansas Speedway. Elliott held strong inside the top five through the opening portion of the event. Green-flag pit stops began on lap 33, with Elliott hitting pit road on lap 36 for four tires, fuel and a chassis adjustment. He was running sixth when the first caution of the race flew on lap 55. Under the yellow, Elliott reported his No. 9 Chevrolet was loose, prompting crew chief Alan Gustafson to call for four tires, fuel and an air-pressure adjustment. Restarting from the outside of row four, the 29-year-old powered to second on lap 64 before ultimately finishing stage one in third on lap 80.
During the stage break, Elliott said the handling of his Chevrolet had improved but still wasn’t quite where he needed it. The team made another air-pressure adjustment along with fresh tires and fuel during the pit stop. He took the green for stage two from the second row and was scored fourth when a caution came out on lap 90. Staying out, he restarted in the same position and advanced to second by lap 102. He was running in third when green-flag pit stops began on lap 119, with Elliott bringing the No. 9 Kelley Blue Book Chevrolet to the attention of his crew shortly after. Once the pit cycle was completed on lap 130, Elliott was scored in the runner-up spot. He held onto second for several laps before slipping back to fourth, where he finished the stage.
Ahead of the final stage, Elliott pitted for four tires and was the second car off pit road, lining up on the front row for the restart on lap 173. He quickly grabbed the lead and maintained it until lap 196. When the caution came out on lap 211, the 2020 Cup Series champion was in the fourth spot. After a fast pit stop for four tires and fuel, he restarted from the outside of row two on lap 217. A multi-car incident immediately brought out another yellow, but Elliott stayed out and restarted from the inside of row two on lap 223. He was running fourth when debris brought out the caution with just 14 laps remaining. Gustafson made the call for four tires and fuel during the pit stop. Elliott was the first car off pit road with four tires, lining up seventh for the restart behind cars that had taken just two tires.
The field went back to green, but another caution came out, sending the race into overtime. An on-track incident brought out the yellow before the leader took the white flag, forcing another overtime attempt. Elliott lined up on the outside of row five for the restart and surged forward to take over the lead coming to the checkered flag for his second victory of the season.
“Everything worked out perfect for me,” Elliott said following the win. “Had a great push through (turns) one and two. That kind of all started with the No. 6 (Brad Keselowski). I had a big run off of two. The seas kind of parted and I just was able to keep my momentum up. That was really it. Obviously we still had pretty good tires compared to those guys, but what a crazy finish. Hope you all enjoyed that. I certainly did. Really proud of this No. 9 Kelley Blue Book Chevrolet team. Had a really solid weekend, win or no win. Really nice to qualify really well. We’ll certainly enjoy this, man. This is pretty cool. Just never take this stuff for granted because it’s hard to come by. Learned that the hard way. Always enjoy it. Always appreciate it.
“Thanks to everybody at KBB. What a great partner. This is our 10th season together, which is pretty cool. Everybody at Chevrolet and Hendrick Motorsports, I appreciate it. Glad to be bringing one home.”
The win locked Elliott into the Round of 8 of the playoffs with one race still remaining in the Round of 12.
