A customer walks up to the counter and asks for a specific brand.

Another wants the lowest price.

A third just needs it now.

Those demands, all of which must be met, are carefully considered by distributors. What winds up on the shelf is the result of constant evaluation, competing priorities and calculated decisions.

As Mike Mohler, executive vice president and chief purchasing officer for the

, puts it, “It’s (something) we grapple with on a daily basis.”

The Four Pillars Behind Every Decision

At the distributor level, brand selection starts with what Mohler calls “the four pillars.”

First comes cost. “I need to have a competitive acquisition cost… but I need to think about total cost.” That includes everything from freight to handling to overall profitability.

Next is logistics. A supplier has to deliver product in a way that fits the distributor’s operation, not just offer a good price.

Then comes category management. The goal is simple in theory and difficult in practice. Stock the right part, in the right place, at the right time, in the “right brand.”

Finally, there is data. Clean cataloging, strong product information and insight into how parts move all factor into the decision.

If a brand cannot support all four areas, Mohler says it is unlikely to make the cut.

The Customer Is Driving More Than Ever

But even if all those pillars are met, the real test is the customer. Today’s shops have numerous suppliers at their disposal; ready and waiting for a chance to deliver the required products via the desired brands.

“If they want an oxygen sensor from Bosch, we’ve got to be the guy to get them that. If they want an air fuel ratio sensor from Denso, we’ve got to be the guy to get them that,” said Mohler. “We’re carrying SKUs in multiple brands because our customer demands it.”

Distributors also have to account for a wide range of customers.

“We’ve got people that want to pay for a $500 brake job. We’ve got people that can’t afford a $500 brake job, and that’s fine.”

That drives a tiered strategy. Premium brands, mid-tier lines and opening price point options all have a role.

As Mohler points out, “that lower price point necessarily means we have to sell much more to be able to make the same dollars.”

Data Is Replacing Guesswork

All of these decisions continue to evolve as distributors respond to changing demand, new technologies and ongoing market pressure.

“We have a more eclectic and more demanding customer base than we’ve ever had,” explained Mohler. “They now can pick and choose what branding they want. We have to become experts in reading minds, and we use data and all the best thinking to try to figure that out.”

Daniel Hemric breathed a sigh of relief after capturing his first top-10 of the season on the streets of St. Petersburg and made a massive ascent in the standings. The driver of the No. 19 Motion Industries Chevrolet Silverado RST rallied from being involved in an incident on lap 26 and drove from 24th into the top-10 during the final segment to advance 10 spots in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Trucks Series standings to 19th.

Friday’s qualifying session was washed away in the Florida rain and forced Hemric to start from 34th position on Saturday under bright sunshine. Only one caution slowed the opening 20-lap stage as Hemric methodically worked his way to 21st by the end of the first segment. Kevin Bellicourt and the Motion Industries team armed Hemric with fresh tires and fuel under the subsequent three-minute stage break.

Shortly after restarting 21st, Hemric met adversity when he was pushed into an incident on the exit of Turn 8 which also included his MHR teammate Christian Eckes. Hemric pitted twice to assess damage to the nose and right side of his Chevrolet, restarted 30th on lap 31 and was scored 21st on lap 40 at the end of the segment.

Hemric restarted 20th on lap 44 but took advantage of a caution on lap 53 to pit and utilize fresh tires. The call by Bellicourt and company paid huge dividends down the stretch as the fresh rubber allowed Hemric to blitz through the field after restarting 24th on lap 56. He rapidly climbed inside the top-10 by lap 64 and took the checkered flag in eighth position for his best finish in three races this season.

“It sure feels good to get a top-10, at least get some sort of a good finish to get our season rolling,” Hemric said after the street course race. “Great to have Motion Industries on board today, Gates Hydraulics, Chevrolet. I wasn’t sure what shape we’d be in after getting in that wreck in the second stage, but the balance was pretty good and Kevin [Bellicourt] made a great call to get tires on the second-to-last caution. That really gave us a nice advantage and thought we could get even more had we caught another caution. Overall good day, good response. Glad we could gain some points and we’ll keep working towards Darlington.”

Daniel Hemric’s afternoon at Talladega Superspeedway ended early after a flat right rear tire triggered an accident and an early retirement. The driver of the No. 19 Gates Hydraulics Chevrolet Silverado RST finished 34th after suffering hard contact following a cut tire and sits 32 points below the cut line in seventh position in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Trucks Series playoff standings with one race remaining in the Round of 8.

Hemric took the green flag in 17th position on Friday afternoon and wasted no time moving towards the front. He utilized both lanes of the draft to advance inside the top-10 just three laps into the event. On lap four, Hemric suffered severe contact to the right side of his Gates Hydraulics Chevrolet as a multi-truck accident triggered beside of him on the frontstretch. He sustained damage to the right-side door and significant harm to the right front and right rear fenders.
Crew chief Kevin Bellicourt took command of the damage control efforts as Hemric made multiple pit stops to address the harm. He restarted at the tail of the draft on lap eight and rebounded to charge into the top 10 by the end of Stage 1 to collect one point on lap 20.

The Gates Hydraulics crew made additional repairs during the stage caution to address the right-side fenders and mitigate the rubs on both right-side tires. Consequently, Hemric restarted 34th on lap 27 and went forward once again in Stage 2. He advanced to 15th by lap 32 and restarted ninth on lap 36. Hemric’s maneuvers to progress forward came up just shy of additional points as he ran 11th at the end of Stage 2 on lap 40.

Under the subsequent stage caution, Hemric made two more pit stops as he continued to endure tire rubs from bodywork contacting the right rear tire. Despite the repairs, Hemric cut a right rear tire in the middle of the draft on lap 53. He also sustained terminal damage to the rear of his Chevrolet after absorbing severe contact from the No. 5 truck. Upon assessing the damage on pit road, Hemric drove to the garage area and was dealt a 34th-place finish.

“We cut a right rear tire,” Hemric said after the incident. “We had damage from lap five or six and really the Gates Hydraulics Chevrolet was destroyed. We were fortunate enough to just constantly getting it more and more clearanced. We were out of right rear tires, and being out of tires, we needed more so we didn’t have a used tire where the side wall was almost worn through from the damage. We didn’t have any to put on and NASCAR wouldn’t give us one, so it was a bunch of things for a while there. Finally, one of the tires we put back on, it blew down the back straightaway and felt like I was going to have to get to pit road. There was no yellow and I got smoked from behind, 15 or 20 seconds after the tire went down. That was strange and kind of unfortunate that we were in that situation.”
Hemric will enter the final race of the second round at Martinsville Speedway 32 points behind the provisional cut line to advance to the championship finale.
