Source: http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/fake-auto-parts-and-road-safety/ ANY legitimate car nut would tell us not to scrimp on automotive parts, especially counterfeit ones, since the “savings wouldn’t be worth the headache”. Lately, there is clamor within the domestic auto-parts industry about the proliferation of fakes being sold by unscrupulous auto supply shops. Most are imported from abroad and costs only a fraction of original parts but bear very identical packaging. Current available data from the Land Transportation Office (LTO) tallies 7,690,038 registered vehicles across the country, bulk of which are in National Capital Region. Even a third of that figure would be a very lucrative market for fake parts. Fakes are not to be confused with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts. OEM parts undergo the same rigid quality and performance testing standard procedures as original ones. Besides, some of a vehicle’s components are actually made by separate OEM companies as contractors to huge car manufacturers, like Toyota, Mercedes Benz, BMW, or Honda. Examples of top 100 global OEM companies are JTEKT Corp., Bosch GmbH, Denso Corp., Yazaki Corp., BASF SE and NTN Corp. Independent bogus manufacturers may counterfeit both original and OEM parts. Recently, auto enthusiast and veteran journalist Rey Langit hosted auto parts advocate lawyer Noven Joseph Quioc in one of his programs. Lawer Quioc said the Philippines unfortunately lacks facilities for accident and fatality analysis, such as those in developed countries like the US, making efforts to understand the cause of accidents difficult. Quioc said fake auto parts are not treated at the same level as spurious drugs or food items since they don’t seem to have an immediate lethal or health impact. Langit said it is quite alarming that some of the most commonly counterfeited parts are directly related to passenger safety than cosmetic value. Examples are mag wheels, tires, bearings, brake discs, brake pads, rubber rings, axle boots, oil filters and under chassis components, such as tie rods, rack ends and ball joints. In most cases, consumers are unaware that they are buying a fake part since the packaging of counterfeits is almost like that of original products. There are times that a consumer would consciously prefer a fake auto part for the fraction of a cost in order to save. That’s why many car enthusiasts suggest to only purchase parts from reliable and reputable auto supply shops. These shops usually have posters or flyers that show comparisons of packaging and product quality of parts in order to help consumers identify if what they are buying is fake. More often that not, fake products have misspellings, grammatical errors or design inconsistencies, such as misaligned texts or inaccurate colors in the packaging. The quality of the boxes and hologram/security stickers are of substandard quality. Some parts are also plastic-sealed to avoid tampering. “Fake car parts compromise the safety of everyone in the vehicle. For instance, buying fake rims, tires or brakes may not seem much, but many thrifty car owners forget to understand that these parts keep direct contact with the road. Should these parts fail, the accident will most likely be catastrophic, if not cause of traffic,” said Jose Nicolas Calanoc, deputy editor of C! Magazine. “Those who are buying fake automotive parts should ask themselves: are their and their passenger’s lives worth that amount they get to save?” he said. Arnel Doria, president of Safety Riders Association of the Philippines and Safe-T Ryders Training Center, said in a recent news conference that the menace of fake auto parts is not just restricted to loss of life but translates into a loss of revenue for an industry, as well. It also means less taxes and revenues for the government because the firms that make these fake parts do not pay taxes. Worse, many of these fake parts are smuggled into the country. That’s why international and local auto parts makers are coordinating with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to raid and seize these items. The law-enforcement agency has been at it for almost two decades now, following complaints. Once caught, importers, distributors and retailers of fake parts will be charged in violation of the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines. Recently, the National Bureau of Investigation conducted simultaneous raids in Metro Manila, Metro Cebu, Davao and Tagum, resulting in a rich haul of fake automotive parts. Again, would you rather risk your life and your loved ones for a fraction of a price? To reach the writer, e-mail [email protected]

Napa doesn't make anything so its all just privately branded. That being said, you have to watch what you buy. Rock Auto doesn't have their own brand and sells the manufacturer branded parts directly from other suppliers. The reality is that since rock auto, amazon, and other online sellers hit the market and online purchasing increased, margins dropped because of heavy competition. Large companies like Napa have more overhead than Rock Auto. Rock Auto is drop-shipping, they don't have any warehouses or parts stores. They are order takes and have negotiated with companies like Parts Authority and other WDs to send out (drop ship) their orders. They make much less margin but sell a lot. They have much less overhead; no stores, no large staff of employees, etc., so they can afford to do that. Napa can't sell at those prices without closing some stores, laying off some people, and reducing overhead to operate at lower margins. So...to keep margins higher, Napa renegotiates with manufacturers and sometimes quality suffers because the manufacturers try to make it for less.

I agree with @MCT about Rockauto and I always check amazon as well although rockauto has the best pricing but you need to factor in the shipping to see if its still the best after that because retailers like Advance, Autozone, and O'Reilly will offer you free shipping and discount codes but the parts are higher priced. So check around and net it down to final costs after shipping and tax. The plus about going to a retailer is that if you need to exchange or return, it's easier.

Rubber shock absorber for automobiles With the development of social economy, the automobile industry at home and abroad is facing a period of rapid change, which is characterized by further improving the service life of the automobile under the premise of ensuring driving safety, riding comfort, high speed and luxury. Damping products are used to control the vibration and noise of automobiles and to improve their handling stability. They are generally placed in the engine frame, rod holder, suspension shaft lining, center bearing bracket, bump limiter and torsional vibration absorber to improve the safety and comfort of automobiles. Damping products can be divided into four categories: bracket type, shaft lining type, buffer type and damping type. The main requirements of damping, heat resistance and fatigue resistance are good. Automobile shock absorber rubber products include engine bearings, suspension components, rubber springs, rubber air springs and impact rubber protective parts. In recent years, in order to improve the safety, comfort and maneuverability of automobiles, the variety and quantity of shock absorber rubber products for automobiles are increasing as the number of shock absorber rubber products on a car has reached 50-60 pieces.

The measuring rod part of the oil gauge The measuring rod part of the oil gauge generally has three structures: steel wire, steel belt (Bian Chi), and many winding wires. Among them, spring steel wire is commonly used in steel wire structure, and the material is hard, which is suitable for the relatively slow bending ruler tube. The multi strand wire is easy to insert and plugged in the bending scale tube, but the price is higher. The material of flat ruler generally chooses 0.8mm~1.2mm stainless steel strip, and the price is relatively low. As the core part of the ruler, the head of a ruler is the most important part of the ruler. In the drawing, it is easy to rub with the ruler tube that matches with it. The particles produced by the friction will fall into the lubricating oil. The unclean lubricating oil will cause great wear to the bearings of the engine. In the indicator part of the scale, the head can be designed as a roller structure, which is not only effective. The scale has reduced the tube pulling force of the ruler and reduced the scraping of the ruler head and the ruler tube. For the oil gauge with steel strip structure, in order to make the gauge clearly indicate the position of the liquid level, it is easier for users to read the oil gauge. Generally, the head of the flat ruler is treated with sand blasting or press mesh, and some rhombic pits can be set on the head of the plastic. These pits are disconnected from each other, so that the oil can climb up the trough under the siphon effect, which affects the accurate reading of the scale.

Oil resistant rubber, including NBR, ACM, ECO and other synthetic rubber, is an important raw material for automobile rubber flexion, accounting for about 15%~20%. In recent years, the oil like stocks are not new and the application range is expanding rapidly. 1.NBR is the most widely used and widely used type in the field of rubber and rubber, which accounts for more than 80% of the rain oil rubbers used in automobiles. It has very good ketone oil properties, and in the environment of four categories of gasoline and Chai run, the use of Shou 6 can reach 10-20 km. Generally working at -20~+120 C, the same energy is up to 5~10 years, the lowest humidity is -30~-40 C, and the maximum can reach 130~140 C. However, oil and cold resistance, oil resistance and oxygen aging often have the contradiction between the two laws, and the global NBR enterprises have reached more than 20, the annual output is more than 300 thousand T, and the strict species as many as 30 species totalling 300 Above production brand, main enterprise Lansheng and Rui lie occupied about 2/3, he has Jin, Xi Bo Er, JSR and so on. In order to make up for the difference in performance between NBR and meet the requirements of different aspects, the NBR produced nowadays is based on oil level.(the size of acrylonitrile) is divided into five types: low, medium, middle, high, high and high. The majority of the vehicles are middle and high, that is, NBR26 and 3 account for more than 4/5, which are mainly made of automobile hose, each and seal, especially oil seal and O ring. NBR is a copolymer of butadiene and propene, and acrylonitrile is from 18-41. In addition to the standard type of NBR17042707 (N41), 3408 (DN214), 3804, and 5007, a variety of easy to be soluble, easy to wear, corrosion resistant, low humidity, aging resistant, and a series of other chemical physics are also developed. Their ratio of stars to stars is expanding in NBR. In addition, there are other forms of NBR, such as liquid NBR, shape NBR, powder NBR, as well as NBR in common viewing form, NBR/PVC blends and so on. (1) Partially cross-linked NBR can be prepared by introducing divinylbenzene into NBR, which can improve the processing performance, easily press out the jade, increase the speed and reduce the deformation. For example, Hycar1042JSRN210S, Krynac810 and so on (2) NBR add carboxylic acid as three of third components. The polymer one to one carboxyl NBR can improve the adhesion of NBR and metal, and further improve the oil resistance, aging resistance, tearing resistance and resistance to damage of the gum. For example, Hycar1072, N34, JSRN632S and so on (3) NBR added a polymerized antioxidant to the polymer to become a part of the main key of the polymer to prevent the loss of the antiaging agent during the use of the product, thus greatly improving the aging resistance and service life of NBR. Such as SRNS351, N541. With special formula, the heat resistance and oil resistance of the NBR are even comparable to (4) NBR D two, acrylonitrile and acrylonitrile mononitrile ester, which can greatly improve the heat resistance and oil resistance of NBR, and use the level of 5 at the working environment of 50 C, which is basically close to the level of ACM). The unsaturated double bond is saturated by hydrogen saturation in the polymerization. Hydrogenated or hydrogenated NBR, also known as high saturation NBR tube, is called HNBR. It completely modifies the traditional NBR and improves it by one grade. It combines oil resistance, heat resistance, cold resistance, aging resistance and high mechanical strength and elongation. Its price is doubled. The work strength can reach -40~150 C, resistance to oil, except the most suitable for engine O ring, tree pad, automobile fuel and run trickle system rubber tube, it has become the main stream of main raw materials of automobile drive belt and brush strip, HNBR has been unique in the field of NBR, and the world's NBR production manufacturers are developing and producing, such as the Zetpol HSN of Japanese reion. Their saturation degree is Therban (HNBR) and A (99.5%), B (98%) and C(95%),CNs were divided into 17% (34% acrylonitrile), 19% (38% acrylonitrile) and 22% (44% acrylonitrile) for different uses. (6) NBR blends with other materials have greatly improved the properties of NBR. In recent years, NBR has been developed into a commercial production brand. NBR/PVC blends can significantly improve the ozone resistance and weathering resistance. Well, the oil resistance, acid and alkali resistance, wear resistance and processing technology have been improved. It has been widely used in the outer coating of automobile tube and the rubber parts of automobile. The blending ratio of NBR/PVC can be from 70/30 to 50/50, and the commercialization grades include NipolDN820, Krynac Nv850 and so on.Two is NBR/EPDM blends (20/30 or 60/40) can improve the heat resistance and aging resistance of NBR, use the temperature to reach -50~150 C, commonly used to manufacture car protection sleeves, tubes, production grades of JSRNE and so on. The three is NBR/DOP blend (100/50), that is, filling the oil by filling the DOP plasticizer at the time of rubber polymerization. It can not only keep the strength of the maple, but also reduce the mixing difficulty, shorten the mixing time and save energy, which is mainly used as the automobile fuel tube. Production brands include Nipol DN224, Hycar1082, krynac843, etc. China's NBR production enterprises include Lanzhou petrochemical, Jilin petrochemical and Zhenjiang South Emperor (Taiwan capital) 3, a total of more than 40 brands. Ford is recalling about 550,000 cars and SUVs in North America to fix a gearshift problem that could cause the vehicles to roll away unexpectedly. The recall covers certain 2013 through 2016 Fusion sedans and some 2013 and 2014 Escape small SUVs. Ford says a bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission can fall off. If this happens, the driver could shift into park but the vehicle could be in another gear. That could let the vehicle roll, increasing the risk of injury or crash. The company says it doesn't know of any crashes or injuries. Ford is advising owners to use the parking brake. Dealers will replace the shifter bushing at no cost. Owners will be notified by July 30. Parts should be available late this quarter.

It’s in every American’s blood to achieve more, do better, strive. (Well, most Americans. Everyone has that one cousin who doesn’t do a whole lot.) But in this hyper-aware, hyper-competitive world in which we live, I’d like everyone to do one, huge thing: less. Of everything. What? Yes, that’s right, less. You know that phrase you often hear when meeting new people and exchanging business cards, “I’m a jack of all trades, master of none?” That’s not a good thing. And I’m not sure why we hear it so much. I think it’s meant as a badge of honor. Or maybe it’s meant to be a sign of humility. But that person needs to listen to his or her own words and act on them. I don’t care how big your business is. Everyone is trying to do too much, be too much to too many other people and businesses. The signs are everywhere: Too few employees trying to do more and more complex tasks; companies offering myriad services, many of which seem impossible to accomplish them all well; half-completed projects; people chasing their tails, going after the shiny new ball of aluminum foil. What’s the result? Are your sales down? Do you feel like you’ve thrown everything you can at the wall and nothing is sticking? If so, I’m pretty sure it’s not the market: It’s you. Stop it. Stop trying to be everything, and watch your sales improve. Let’s get back to our customers and give them what they want and need. What’s the best way to do that? Listen to them. It isn’t any harder than that. The future is not in a web page, an app or an algorithm. Success is rooted in connecting with people, discovering their needs and providing them the products and services they need to do their business. It’s as simple as that. That's a plastic push pin that usually comes from the manufacturer as part of the assembly. Whats the year, make, and model of the vehicle? I'm not sure if the dealer would sell it separately, you would need to look at the schematic, probably only as the complete unit. Might need to get the entire latch assembly. You could look through the Dorman hardware catalog and see if you can match something up that's close then search for the dorman part number: https://www.dormanproducts.com/flipbook/dorman/automotive-hardware/2006-Automotive-Hardware.pdf

One of the best money-saving products that’s ever been invented is cooling system sealer. Most products will successfully seal minor coolant leaks to stop the loss of coolant that leads to engine overheating. Specially formulated “head gasket” sealers also can stop many head gasket leaks and save your customer thousands of dollars in expensive engine repairs. What’s more, coolant sealers also can be added to the coolant as a preventive measure to plug small leaks before they turn into big ones. Coolant leaks can occur anywhere in the cooling system, including the water pump, hoses, radiator, heater core, thermostat housing, expansion plugs, head gasket, combustion chamber or cylinder block. Regardless of where a leak occurs, the end result is always the same: coolant loss that sooner or later allows the engine to overheat. Overheating is bad news because excessive heat causes metal to expand beyond normal limits and clearances. The result can be piston scuffing, cylinder scoring, valve sticking, damaged valve guides and even warped cylinder heads. Overheating also can crush an otherwise good head gasket, causing the gasket to leak when the radiator is refilled with coolant. Most cooling system sealers can seal small pinhole leaks in radiators and heater cores as well as hairline cracks where the core and end tanks are joined, and porosity leaks in aluminum cylinder heads and blocks. Products designed to seal more serious leaks also can delay or even eliminate the need to replace a head gasket or heater core (both of which are expensive labor-intensive repair jobs). Stopping a water pump shaft seal leak, however, or a large leak in a hose is beyond the capabilities of most products. The key to selling cooling system sealers is to match the product with the leak your customer is trying to stop. And the keys to a successful repair are choosing the right product and then following the directions on the label. Step one is to figure out what’s leaking. Is it the radiator, heater core, water pump or a bad hose? Head gasket leaks are harder to diagnose because leaks are usually internal rather then external. A mysterious loss of coolant with no puddles under the vehicle or obvious signs of leakage under the hood often indicates a leaking head gasket, or in some cases a leaky radiator pressure cap. A head gasket leak can be confirmed by pressure-testing the cooling system, using a chemical test strip that detects the presence of combustion gases in the coolant, or by checking the dipstick for signs of coolant in the oil (yellowish gunk on the dipstick). Radiator caps also can be pressure-tested to see if the cap holds its rated pressure. If it can’t, replace the cap. Sometimes, leaky hose connections can be fixed by simply tightening or replacing the clamp. But if a hose is dripping or spraying coolant, replacing the hose is the recommended repair. Same for a leaky water pump. If a leak is something that a coolant sealer has a good chance of stopping, select a product that is formulated for that type of leak (read the label). Tell your customer to follow the directions for how the product should be used and what, if any, additional steps are recommended to ensure a successful seal. In most cases, the sealer is added to the radiator or coolant reservoir. Makeup coolant then is added and the engine is started so the sealer and coolant can circulate until the leak stops. Additional coolant may be required after the engine has reached operating temperature and cooled back down. Caution: Customers should be warned to NEVER open a radiator cap on a hot engine. Steam can blow out and cause serious burns. Wait until the engine has cooled before opening the cap. Source: http://www.counterman.com/coolant-sealers-can-help-vehicle-owners-save-money/

“Tommy Boy,” starring David Spade and Chris Farley, is the ultimate movie about automotive parts. In fact, it might be the only movie in which auto parts play a fundamental role in the story. While Tommy Callahan (Farley) and Richard Hayden (Spade) aren’t counter professionals, their cross-country journey in the 1995 film can serve as a valuable resource to anyone who sells auto parts for a living. These clips can teach you what to do – well, mostly what NOT to do – when trying to make a sale. 1. Don’t take “no” for an answer. 2. Guarantees are meaningless. 3. Relax – and be yourself. 4. Don’t try to be too clever. 5. Don’t set anything on fire. Source: http://www.counterman.com/sell-auto-parts-lessons-tommy-boy/

The cold weather is definitely helping battery sales! http://www.kfyrtv.com/content/news/Car-battery-sales-up-due-to-cold-weather-467572473.html BISMARCK, N.D. - It happens a lot this time of year. You go out to start your car in the morning and the battery is dead. The staff at O'Reilly auto parts in Bismarck say sales have spiked for car batteries, fuel additives, and anything else people need to keep going in winter, which comes in handy for a lot of people. "I came up here from Florida some years back. I never had those kinda issues, but here in Bismarck I've definitely had some issues like that, and thankfully I've had some help," said David Baxter, Bismarck resident. O'Reiley says it's selling 10 batteries on a slow day, maybe 20-30 batteries a day on colder days.

Bald eagle spotted eating black cat on downtown Norfolk sidewalk in front of Advance Auto Parts A black cat apparently crossed the wrong path Tuesday afternoon – and ended up as lunch for a bald eagle. Dozens of people crowded around as the eagle ate the cat on the sidewalk. Traffic stopped in front of Advance Auto Parts at 26th Street and Monticello Avenue as drivers took a closer look, said store manager Bobby Rafalski. He’d only ever seen anything remotely like that at a zoo, “not an eagle just randomly in the middle of the city.” The eagle was more than two feet long from head to tail and stood around a foot and a half tall, he said. People were eager to get photos, but they weren’t getting too close. “It’s intimidating. It’s an eagle. It has razor-sharp claws and a razor-sharp beak.” The eagle’s meal, Rafalski said, looked like a fully grown black cat. The eagle nearly picked it clean over the course of about 45 minutes, he said. Employee Carol Sills said there were many birds hanging out on the power lines and street lights as usual, and then suddenly they all took off when the eagle showed up. But once the eagle had landed, people with camera phones flocked. Matt Seniuk, a physics teacher at Norview High School, saw the crowd on Monticello on his way to coach football at Blair Middle. He thought there may have been a fight or an accident, then glimpsed the big bird. “It was surreal. You’re right in the middle of downtown, almost,” Seniuk said. Stranger still: the bird seemed unperturbed by the onlookers. “It was going to enjoy its meal as long as nobody was bothering it.” Seniuk said he’d seen eagles in zoos and while rafting on the Delaware River in his native Pennsylvania. “In the woods you see things, but I’ve never seen anything like that,” he said. He sent his nature-loving mother graphic photos and video of the eagle’s feast. “She said, ‘You could have warned me,’” he said. “But it’s no different from what you’d see on the Science Channel or National Geographic. That’s nature.” And in nature there’s always a predator and prey. Rafalski said the first call to his store Wednesday morning was a weeping woman looking for her missing black cat. “There’s a lot of cats around here. I just tried to reassure her that it probably wasn’t hers.”

The earnings came out today and the stock dropped... Barron's article: http://www.barrons.com/articles/advance-auto-parts-what-just-happened-1502806791 A big earnings missed combined with disappointing guidance have caused shares of Advance Auto Parts to lose a fifth of their value this morning. By Ben Levisohn Aug. 15, 2017 10:19 a.m. ET Advance Auto Parts (AAP) was trying to get its engine started heading into its earnings report this morning. Instead, it's stalled once again. Advance Auto Parts had gained 7% during the past month at the close of trading. but then it released its second-quarter financial results. Advance reported a profit of $1.58 a share, missing forecasts for $1.65, on sales of $2.26 billion, in-line with analyst expectations. And while its same-store sales were flat--beating expectations for a 0.2% second-quarter decline--Advance now expects comparable-store sales to drop between 1% and 3% this year, below expectations for a 0.5% decline. Guggenheim's Steven Forbes and team explain why they "remain on the sidelines" following Advance's results: Now, shares of Advance Auto Parts are in freefall--and taking its competitors with it. Shares of Advance have plunged 20% to $87.19 at 10:02 a.m. today, while O'Reilly Automotive (ORLY) has fallen 2.9% to $192.70, and AutoZone (AZO) has dropped 3.7% to $505.93.

here are a number of things that could be causing this p0420 catalyst efficiency code. The most common thing is the catalytic converter itself is no longer functioning properly. The other likely thing is the rear O2 (oxygen) sensor is no longer working properly. Other things could include exhaust leaks, damaged exhaust pipes, damaged O2 sensor wiring/connectors, plugged catalytic converter, etc. The easiest thing to do first is a visual check of things. Visually inspect the exhaust system for leaks, check the catalytic converter for dents, holes, severe discoloration, and check for a rattle inside. If any of those syptoms are there, the converter likely needs replacement. Then, visually inspect the downstream O2 sensor (behind the converter). Check for broken wires, obvious faults, etc. If all that checks out, you'll want to check the operation of the O2 sensor. To do that, you'll need access to a scan tool or oscilliscope. Check that the waveform is pretty steady. If the reading fluctuates then the sensor is likely bad and will need to be replaced. Try this, turn the ignition key to the on position, (engine not running) and pull the fuse to your ECM for 30 seconds and then re-install it. Once re-installed, start the engine and let idle for 1 min and then go for a test drive. If the engine stalls, let it. The ECM is relearning the sensors and engine, just restart it and after 1 min when the RPM drops. Go for a test drive and see if the service engine light comes back on and re-scan for the DTC codes and address the issues indicated by the DTC code.

I've never heard that really and the big difference is that synthetic oil doesn't break down as fast and offers additives that are friction modifiers. When oil breaks down and loses it's ability to properly lubricate, you get more friction which takes a toll on internal engine parts with wear and gumming up the engine, which is why it's important to regularly change oil. Repair shops used to (may still today) offer oil flushes to clean a gummed up engine. Today, clearances are much smaller and tighter and in some cases you have to use synthetic oil. I would say synthetic on newer cars more than older makes a difference and could extend the life of an engine. Once oil breaks down, turns black, no good.

Wouldn't that be something! I still think there is some sort of consolidation that's going to happen between Autozone, Advance, O'reilly, and Napa. There are just too many parts stores and when you add all the other mom and pops and distribution centers, parts everywhere...More and more people buy online and that has to hurt parts sales at these locations unless they are capturing it online, but they still have brick and mortar costs to pay for.

I just placed my first order online at rockauto, was able to get cheap accuvision beam blades for under $2 each, so I ordered 4 sets for my car. Even with the shipping the blades net were under around $2.16 each since I bought 8 of each for two cars I have that take the same size. Not too shabby.

Interesting article, text below: http://www.thedrive.com/the-hammer/12258/why-the-auto-parts-retailers-will-slowly-go-extinct For those of you who have followed Tesla's struggle to sell cars over the last several years, this big cartel version of gaming the system hasn't changed all that much. Thankfully, Southwest developed one hell of an edge. The 1970s fun, cheeky, and unapologetic advertising helped Southwest weather the storms of the marketplace, but there was far more to Southwest's success than just smiles, scantily clad stewardesses, and sassiness. Southwest introduced a long list of efficiencies that forever changed the competitive landscape of the airline industry. Southwest became so efficient, that the once protected competitors were forced to change and innovate, or die. Who won? Pretty much everyone except the Braniffs, Pan Ams and TWAs of that time. AIRLINES FOR AMERICA Editor's Note: Today's average fare remains below the $350 level. AIRLINES FOR AMERICA It doesn't take decades for the small to become big anymore. Let me offer a personal example that led to a recent $20,000 boost to my own bottom line. Seven years ago Autozone, Advance Auto Parts and O'Reillys were my top three suppliers of auto parts for my auto dealership along with an auto auction that I operated near downtown Atlanta. I was on the commercial side. So I received some relief over the inflated markups of a walk-in retail customer like you, But my checkbook still got beat up an awful lot due to the lack of competition in the industry. STEVEN LANG All the brick and mortar companies went to great lengths to keep parts prices artificially high. Back then these three companies would furnish different warranties, different parts numbers, and even different name brands from the same suppliers to wiggle their way out of any price matching request. You wanted an a/c compressor or an alternator for less? Good luck! Google shopping wasn't ready for prime time, and Amazon Prime didn't provide two-day delivery. Even with a commercial discount, I couldn't come close to matching today's online retail prices. So I paid through the nose until around 2014. Right around then, Amazon Prime became a serious competitor to those who were willing to wait a couple of days for their parts. All of a sudden a $200 auto part became a $100 auto part. Shortly after that Rockauto went into high gear and the price dropped even further. Within a few years buying auto parts on the internet became capitalism incarnate with junkyards (car-part.com) and parts specialists (1-800-Radiator.com, LKQ Online) offering easy interfaces that let every consumer have same day service for a long list of parts. My waits became shorter, my parts bills became far cheaper, and my business with the auto parts retailers went down by nearly 80%. What did they do? Nickelshit tactics. A non-stop assembly of hoops and gotchas that made business with them a complete pain in your 'rear end assembly'. They would price match everyone... but Amazon or Rockauto. They offered discount codes off their inflated prices with cryptic alphanumerics (PART40, TRT30) that would change almost weekly for no reason. If those codes expired, tough luck. There were certain vehicles that I still needed parts for that day, which involved too much labor time to risk buying used. So I would bite the bullet and pay a premium on a few of those parts. But then I had what can only be called my ultimate "Fuck it!" moments. Wrong parts. Hours on end wasted trying to wait for parts that weren't available. Supposed deliveries that never took place. This non-stop clusterscrew of ordering parts happened... every... single... week. The online world gradually became easier to deal with while the once reliable employees at these stores were replaced with 18 hour a week part-timers who received minimal training and zero benefits. The auto parts stores often competed against their own online operations. This level of crazy is why, today, I go well out of my way to avoid ordering parts from them. STEVEN LANG Why did all this happen? Simple. The big three auto parts retailers now have over 15,000 stores. The overwhelming majority of which are within a few miles from each other. Cannibalization of a shrinking audience is never a good thing. That level of overhead is dwarfed by the nearly 200,000 individual parts that have to be constantly shipped, stored and delivered to wherever the most immediate need exists. Three companies performing the same function with the same level of overhead is a recipe for disaster once all three lose their pricing power in the marketplace. What will it take for that to happen? Not that much. It all comes down to one unique service that Amazon is slowly pursuing right now: same day delivery. Amazon will likely achieve that service within the next three years. It may take a not so small army of well positioned distribution centers that already sell everything from books, to produce, to auto parts, to millions of products that just require boxing and shipment . Or Amazon may produce a buyout of a commercially strong competitor with a premium reputation (NAPA Auto Parts). This would further their logistical capabilities. Amazon can also partner or acquire third-party parts suppliers that already provide same day service (1-800 Radiator, LKQ, maybe even your local junkyard). Amazon may also be able to launch a 'Prime' membership program that offers same day service for commercial customers such as auto repair shops and fleet operators. Or, they can provide tools and diagnostics that allow mechanics to use scanners and online repair guides that are coupled with their Amazon auto parts listings. Think of an Amazon Fire tablet with an OBDII scanner and a reasonably sophisticated diagnostic program. Instead of calling a store and sometimes having to drive out to pick up that part, your mechanic can just do a few clicks and that's it. Unless the auto parts retailers can merge, consolidate and innovate on an Amazon level, they're dead. All three are already on a death spiral and unlike the Braniffs of yesteryear, there are no local bureaucrats that will save them from a free market.
